- After pressing the Steam button and waiting for like 4 minutes, the left menu appeared with very limited options, including the power settings.
- From there I was able to switch to desktop mode, which took like 10 minutes.
- Steam took like another 5 minutes to load on desktop.
- I right clicked on the tray icon and the popup menu took like 2 minutes to appear.
- Clicked on settings and the window took like another 2-3 minutes to open and load.
- I selected the steam stable, the window darkened and after another 2 minutes I finally got the "you need to restart" popup.
- After that, it took another 10 minutes to actually go back to stable and now it works fine again.
In the end, everything related to the UI of Steam was really slow and took more than half and hour to go back to stable, and I actually tried the beta a second time and the same thing happened.
This was great for me! I had wondered if I wasn't doing something right and just stopped tinkering with it. lol
Saw your comment and figured I'd see if I would experience the same thing and yeah, it's unusably slow. Took a good 30 seconds for the UI to open, probably a minute or two for it to load, 20 seconds to clear the download queue, and so on.
Decided to open the settings menu and switch back to stable while I was still able to (figured it'd be easier in desktop mode) and after waiting another half a minute for the settings menu to load I was successfully able to switch the branch and now the client works as expected again.
Thanks for the heads-up! Gonna hang back on stable for a bit while this is ironed out.
I experienced the same thing. On Beta Steam Deck no longer boots in game mode and stays stuck on splash/loading screen. steam process hangs at somewhere around 100 CPU usage the whole time in top. Steam does seem to start though, because I could see from CPU and disk/filesystem activity that it was updating games while stuck at the splash. So Steam was working -- just with abnormally high cpu usage causing interface hang. The 100 Steam thread is apparently an issue for some non-Deck Linux Steam users too with this beta (saw a complaint on SteamDB Discord). It's just basically softlocks Deck users
I think it's simply misbehaving Steam thread causing the interface to hang. I installed and used this beta fine... while my deck was in offline mode. But switching to online caused game mode to hang, and I had the same thing where clicking the Steam button only responded minutes later after successfully booting but going offline->online in game mode. And then after a reboot I got hit with the neverending splash screen.
Life is a lot easier if you happen to have previously enabled the SSH daemon as you have a nice and easy backdoor to a terminal. I'd highly recommend it if you're gonna regularly be on beta channel.
Some useful commands
Switch to desktop mode: steamos-session-select plasma
Remove beta participation: rm /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/package/beta
Force relog (fix infinite loading user data): rm /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/config/loginusers.vdf
Oh My Gosh Thank you!
