Allow for 1:1 mirroring screen when using external display
When an external display is attached in gaming mode (via usb-c hub), the internal screen goes black and the external screen is used in its native resolution.
It would be great if a setting would allow not to fully switch to an external screen, but to mirror the internal screen (at 800p).
Reason is, to be able to share the content of the Deck's screen, being able to capture it via an external HDMI connection is helpful. But with the internal screen going black, the device becomes just a fancy controller and it's less conclusive to show how to operate the Deck, as you cannot look at its screen.

In desktop mode it's a bit better, as KDE asks for what to do with the external screen, but even when I set it to clone the internal screen, it still seems to use the external monitors resolutions and it's not possible to have a 1:1 mirror with 800p either.

My current solution is to use the Steam Link app on the desktop to capture the content of the Deck's screen, but this has it's own issues (quality varies, in desktop mode Steam crashes, when trying to bring up the keyboard).

+1, my use case is my Steam Deck is mostly docked (while connected to my TV) but I would like to interact w/ the Deck while the TV remains off. Apparently most TV's still provide a signal even when they are off and that is why the steam decks screen is still dark. Having Mirror Mode will fix this or a Deck Screen only mode. Desktop mode has this but would be really useful for Game Mode. Icing on the cake would be to map it to button combo (similar to a function key on a laptop).

Cannot you just use desktop mode?

Cannot you just use desktop mode?
My goal is to stream my play on the Steam Deck. Unfortunately Desktop Mode won't do it for me for two reasons.
I won't be able to stream its normal user interface, which is not the end of the world.
But also it doesn't seem to be able to run games that use Steam Deck specific features, like Aperture Desk Job.
So the only things it'll be able to stream are a standard desktop running standard PC games. I already have a device for that which runs games much faster. I'd rather stream the Steam Deck being the Steam Deck.
Or rather, I used to. This has taken so long to fix the hype has died down and I no longer care.

I'm a bit late, but using Steam Remote Play or Steam Link is probably your best option if
I tried that back when the Steam Deck first came out. I would remote play to a PC which was doing the streaming.
There was a noticeable but small drop in performance on the Steam Deck, but the performance of the stream itself was unacceptable. It was blurry and choppy.
Perhaps I'll give that workaround another go but I'd still rather just be able to do the same display mirroring I'm able to do in desktop mode.

If anyone from Valve is reading this, you should bear in mind that anything you can do to ease people's ability to stream your stuff is free marketing.

Does anybody know a workaround? I don't mind popping the hood a little bit if I have to. I'd like to play it the way it's intended to be played AND capture/stream at the same time.

If I just wanted to plug it into a screen and play it in a non-handheld way, I, like 99% of Steam Deck owners, have a perfectly capable gaming rig and could get better results with that.

you could always get a hdmi splitter where one input can be turned into two, i know some people who have done that for other HDMI only consoles. i am also considering it myself.

Nice idea, I've taken to just unplugging the HDMI cable from the dock until I want to play it on the monitor. Pretty ugly solutions huh Valve, come on!

At this point I think it's worth mentioning that Big Picture Mode has been changed to the Steam Deck's interface. Theoretically, you might not even need Game Mode anymore, as Big Picture Mode is only slightly more limited. Obviously I'm saying all this simply because screen mirroring is most definitely there. For a lot of you, Desktop Mode's performance might be all you need.

I would love to have dual screen support in game mode. It would be much less clunky than having to switch to desktop mode every time I want to use dual screen.
