Proper external keyboard support in gaming mode
I don't think that an external keyboard is properly supported in gaming mode.

1) We need to be able to change the keyboard layout (language) for the external keyboard! TBH I'm quite disappointed that this isn't implemented by default.
2) The shortcuts to open the side menus (Ctrl+1 and Ctrl+2) don't work while in game.

These two issues make playing with keyboard and mouse in game mode not completely supported.

I can list a bunch of reasons why it's necessary. But I will just say that a typical console, the PS4, actually allows you to change your external keyboard layout. Why wouldn't an actual computer be able to?

I mean they launched the device with no option to change the internal soft keyboard layout, as if people outside the US don't exist. No surprise this is not implemented...

It's pretty trivial to change the keyboard layout in Desktop mode: https://www.librebyte.net/en/desktop/change-keyboard-layout-in-kde/

I would guess that fairly few people are actually using external keyboards to play games on the Deck, and out of those who are, even fewer feel the need to have shortcuts on the keyboard to open the side menus instead of using the dedicated buttons on the Deck.

But desktop mode doesn't have the nice features that come with the gaming mode, no? Sorry but what are you trying to say? I'm requesting a missing feature that clearly should be there.

I mean, yeah sure I know how to change the keyboard layout in desktop mode, but I'm asking about gaming mode.

Anyway, I later found out that this is an issue with gamescope, and found a github report on it dating to about a year and a half ago (https://github.com/Plagman/gamescope/issues/203), and Valve didn't fix it. You can see that non-English speakers are interested in solving this issue.

I play my steam deck docked on my desk, and sometimes I like to look something up or simply surf the internet. Some other people use a keyboard, even when playing on a tv in the living room, to type in in-game chat.

I can let go of having shortcuts to open the side menus, but being able to set the layout of an external keyboard is an essential feature.

well you don't use the big picture mode when using KB+m on your PC, so why use it on the deck?

I, and some other people, do want to use an external keyboard in gaming mode. Don't you like the steam deck? Don't you want it to get better? What are you arguing about???

The shortcuts on external keyboard are still broken when in game. Valve, pls fix!
It is super annoying and inconvenient to stand up and go press a button on the docked steam deck, just because we cant assign a key (or at least a combination) of the keyboard to opening the Steam menu.
