+1, that would be great for reading books and the like as well, never thought of it before!

We get a gyro and a touch screen but no basic features of a modern mobile phone (swiftkey/swipe typing, auto rotate)... Maybe one day.

Would like this too. The Deck is surprisingly nice to use to read some manga.
You can already go to portrait mode by going to "Advanced display settings", change the screen orientation there, and when you are done with the reading, return to the original settings. Not very straightforward, though.
Would be lovely to have a simplified button for that, or even some kind of option for automatic rotation based on the gyroscope.
Someday... maybe...

+1 I installed the Decky loader but there is no such option as well. It d be nice if the option auto rotate or just horizontal portrait mode option would be part of the steam side bar.

I'm trying to find workarounds for this but everything I found so far is really inconvenient. So an official implementation or a decky loader plugin would be awesome

That sounds like hell on earth. Buy a Kindle Fire 10 on sale and install a comic reader like Tachiyomi.

While I generally agree that the Deck is really strongest as a gaming device, I understand why some people might want to try and maximize the value they get out of it. Early on, lots of people were talking about plugging a Wacom tablet into it and using it for digital art, or using it for video production and editing.

Yeah! Please add that feature!

Desktop or game mode?

It can be done manually by running this in a terminal on desktop mode

/usr/bin/kscreen-doctor output.eDP.rotation.normal

It is undone with

/usr/bin/kscreen-doctor output.eDP.rotation.right

BUT the touch pad mouse won't rotate and the keyboard will be squished and unusable (valve would have fix those things)

THEREFORE I recommend that you instead make custom .desktop files per app that will rotate the screen, run the program and then un-rotate when the app is closed. (You can use the built in window management to maximize or full screen the apps)

Example for Koodo Reader
