Steam Deck@10W: KING OF THE HILL

Impressive video by The Phawx. The Steam Deck seems unbeatable at 10 watts. But the Ally falls completely down the hill. What have Asus and AMD done? Or what not? Is the Z1E perhaps too fat for a handheld after all? Will it be fixed by the time of the release? In any case, Valve's custom APU has clearly been developed for its intended purpose.

On the contrary, I can't imagine why you would do that. One of those is $2,000. Why would you buy that so you could play docked instead of just getting a more powerful desktop system for less?

Downpowering the Deck (or the Ally, for that matter) is somewhat of a niche use case. Yeah, it's all cool & ♥♥♥♥, but if Valve really intended this to be the main modus operandi, why the ♥♥♥♥ did they allow us higher power limits to begin with?

Oh yeah, right, they didn't intend this to be the main usage scenario...

10 watts or below is a relevant use case for a portable console. And of course, you don't throttle the system down to that. That's was only done for the test.

The measured values simply mean that the Ally runs out of power after 4 hours at the latest, regardless of whether you play Cyberpunk or Stardew Valley.

I am sorry I didn't explicitly stated that reducing the power consumption is optimal for battery play sessions and that is not a niche use case at all, it is just using the deck outdoors or in a trip. So yeah, if I am doing a 3h train journey and want to play the witcher 3, I limit fps to 30, set settings on low and FSR to balanced and limit tdp to 8w. I could use my 40 fps better image quality settings and 15w profile but I would run out of battery halfway through the trip.

People are just trying to find literally any reason to pretend that their old and outdated system is still better than new stuff.

You can see that everywhere. There are still people who try to argue that their GTX 1080 is somehow better than most modern cards for XY specific reason.
