I'm loving the steam deck and the interface, And I've been wondering.
Why hasn't valve made steam os 3 available to download? it's so good.

It isn't ready for standalone release yet.

Yeah. I can see why Valve hasn't published an ISO for SteamOS 3. I think there's still a few bugs to be ironed out before it's publicly available.

It's not like you need SteamOS for the interface. Desktop mode is KDE, the same as you'd get on any distro (such as Kubuntu), and the game mode replaced the old Big Picture Mode on all platforms a while back.

Good question! Now, I could be wrong, but I think it's because maintaining a distro is not a money making activity. People who maintain Linux distributions want to make certain that humanity can benefit from developments in the computer science and networking arts, without those improvements being completely captured by private interests.

On the Steam Deck we benefit from years of work already done by the people behind KDE and Arch. I agree, though. I trust Valve enough to use an OS that they would maintain, and I believe that they would make a good one.

Pretty much this. Install your distro of choice (I went with Debian with KDE Plasma) and then install Steam on it. You get Steam on Linux, and the ability to install whatever you want from sources other than Discover (which Debian has too) without worrying about things getting blown away when you update. If you want the SteamOS experience of booting straight to game mode, I'm sure you can configure Steam to auto launch at boot and go straight to Big Picture Mode.
