Gonna need more specifics. Just to confirm, are you still running SteamOS, and not Windows?
Name a couple of games. And are these "Open World" games?
Some games stream load while the game is running. Wind Waker was touted as a revolution for this capability, aside from it being mostly water between levels.
Slower drives can result in CPU spikes, but these issues are more apparent on spinning disk HDDs which seem to use 100% CPU for just texture streaming.
If an SD Card is having this issue, then the CPU may already be maxxed out before it attempts to stream load textures.
Playing online. The SD is this SanDisk 1TB Extreme microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card with Adapter - Up to 160MB/s, C10, U3, V30, 4K, A2, Micro SD - SDSQXA1-1T00-GN6MA.
Only played it for a few minutes but it played fine. Solid 60 fps when running around.
