How long till queue waiting ends?
How long till steam deck doesn't need a reserve queue anymore?

I suggest you either reserve now or just wait until you can get in line for the next version. Valve sees there's real demand now and people are willing to pay for premium features. I expect there'll probably be a more deluxe model released within 3 years at the most. Smaller bezels, bigger screen, perhaps 900p 16:9 instead of 800p 16:10, slightly better performance, significantly better battery life, other miscellaneous improvements based on user feedback.

Beyond Steam Deck there's going to also going to be competing devices from companies with better-developed supply chains like Dell, Lenovo, etc, though it's hard to say what form they'll take or at what price.

I don't mean empty I mean completely gone just like valve index. Where you can still buy it but no frustrating lines.

Probably Q1 next year. Valve already stated they're ramping up production.

I think it will continue to depend on chip availability to make them. The initial reservation was partly because a lot of people were going to want them. But, also because there is a shortage in the supply chain for the parts needed to make them.

If the supply chain goes back to something close to normal, then they will be able to create surplus or on-demand stock to sell.

If this goes to plan, https://www.pcgamer.com/valve-says-steam-deck-production-will-be-in-the-hundreds-of-thousands-by-next-month/ , hopefully after the Christmas sales, it should quiet down and real purchasing should begin. Again, hopefully.

I'm waiting for the queue to end before purchasing. I am not keen on being a guinea pig.

Then you may want to wait to see if the next version will be better in a few years. GabeN did say he may think about making one more powerful and more expensive than the ones out now because demand for the 512GB was so high.

I think you're almost certainly correct. There's the people who ordered on day 1 in "after Q3" meaning "Q4 2022 if you're lucky" so there's going to be queues for a while.

With the social media hype I expect there's a surge in orders around now because Valve is implying they'll be available in October and media outlets picking up on the misinformation:

https://www.econotimes.com/Steam-Deck-availability-Gamers-just-signing-up-now-for-reservations-might-be-unable-to-place-orders-until-October-1628722
https://synchedin.com/blog/long-wait-for-steam-deck-orders/

I think the only chance the queue has of shrinking will be when it starts to come out in the wash that actually the experience is pretty glitchy and the hardware is a bit flaky. That will put off the casual market and with RDNA 3 being launched around the same time as SD1 starts shipping (to people outside the first hour of ordering) I can see enthusiasts having their heads turned and maybe even Valve launching the SD2 pre-order process.

There is alternatives already.

The existing alternatives cost 2-3x as much and have half the performance and much worse battery life, they're not really alternatives in the sense I use the word.

I'm talking about stuff based on Ryzen 6000 series APUs. The very first laptops based on this chip generation are starting to trickle in and they're extremely promising. No word yet on how they perform with a restricted TDP suited to a handheld though.

Handhelds using these chips still won't be as good of a deal as Steam Deck since it uses a built-for-purpose custom chip, but they'll at least be in the same ballpark.

Aya and GPD are very nimble companies, they could possibly have something based on Ryzen 6000 out by the end of the year, though demand will probably be high and they'll certainly charge over $1000 USD.

Since they have not yet released this device to other markets I don't see them having immediate availability for a LONG time.
