Shouldn't a factory reset keep the current version of software / version?
Hello all,

Today I had to perform a couple of factory resets on my Steam Deck. It seems that when it done this it went back to a previous Steam OS version?

Perhaps this device has some kind of A/B partition that it swaps?

A bit confusing as I've been having so many issues so I was trying to start fresh with the latest OS by performing a factory reset, only to find it keep going back to an old version.

Perhaps this is normal?

This thing is driving me damn crazy, many more hours wasted trying to get it to work well.

Thanks

It resets it to how you received it out of the box. OS and all. Any games you have on your SD card will not be affected though.
incorrect, factory resets may help depending on what u did to the system, but it will or can effect ur sd cart, if u have games locked after factory reset or system replacement, u will have to format ur sd cart again, sad deck usage, if u reset, try and not custom install 3rd party software, including firefox, even after if u have to reformat sd cause of deck locking, submit a ticket, while the deck is still beta and sold good, thers basics u can do to fix some troubles, (thrid party hardware isnt supported depite vavles pr staement) if thats a p[roblem...

The term "factory reset" means that it is reset to the state it was in when it left the factory. By definition, it should not have the latest version of the OS after a factory reset. You probably want to just reimage it with the latest OS.

When you factory reset any Linux based Android device it will perform a reset and keep the current operating system version.

What I thought happened was it just tells the operating system to reset all the settings.

This means that the steam deck keeps a permanent partition with an old out of the box operating system? Seems odd and a bit backwards but thanks for confirming.

I wonder if Valve test it with upgrading from a previous version as we do or if they flash the latest software directly on skipping the upgrade process.... I bet the last option.

Cheers all

Android is the one that does it backwards, a factory reset should always reset to the factory state as the name says not only deleting all user data but also any changes to the OS since then including updates bc an update may just be the reason why you wanna roll back in the first place.

What do you think factory reset means? It means reset to how it was out of the factory.
