Only game I know that does this is Battlechasers. There isn't a fix for it unfortunately.
Unless one has been added since I beat it.
Those both use Unreal right? I think it's a big specific to that engine. Battlechasers uses Unreal.
i know NME uses unreal and potentially MWC. this may be a good lead as to why
The problem is Microsoft's Media Foundation Platform. Without support for those codecs, the game's attempt to play those videos will cause the game to crash. So Proton substitutes a safe test video for all of those, and the game doesn't crash.
Proton GE uses the Windows support for those files - no crashes, and the videos play - but Valve isn't in a position to distribute those libraries.
Instead, Valve are going through the Steam catalogue and re-encoding those videos into a less-encumbered format that Proton can play. There are quite a lot of videos in the games in the Steam catalogue.
wow! did not know this. ok so do i just wait until these videos eventually get re-encoded? or is there something i can do on my end ?
That's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wild.
ok awesome thanks for these tips!
