How often does proton get updated and how often should I retry games that had issues before? Where can I see if proton updates have been sent to steam deck in gaming mode?

I cannot answer your question about frequency (yet). But you might want to check out https://steamcommunity.com/app/1675200/discussions/0/3273562123573556148/ post on proton_dist.tar . It has the Proton install location (and how to reclaim some space - like a 1GB per proton install !!). From there you could long list the Proton directories and check their date/time stamps (or the tar files before you remove them.)

ProtonDB for game compatibility news, there may be some new steam deck specific sites also., and you can always install Proton G.E (Glorious Eggroll)
It has fixes that valve can't release due to copyright rules, usually Movie/Music fixes

the easiest way to install and keep GE-Proton updated is through ProtonUP-QT (available in the Discovery store on desktop mode)

that 3rd-party version and Proton Experimental have some new stuff popping up almost on a weekly basis (but it's probably not worth retrying everything every week, unless you're desperately waiting for a fix for a specific game)
