Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Accidentally Destroyed my Steam Deck
Wanted to do a shell mod, but I didn't realize that the caps of the ribbon cables are flip open and tugged on them to the point of them breaking off (one of them even shattering) on the right daughterboard and even scratched the board. I also ended up losing the springs to one of the triggers. It's a shame valve doesn't offer a replacement on the daughterboards, and loooking it up on ebay... I might be better off buying a whole new steam deck. Let this be an important lesson for those who seek to do a physical mod of their deck. DON'T PULL ON THE RIBBON CORD CONNECTORS!

Valve do have a repair service. They may well charge you for it.

Again, might be better of getting a new one. Especially since it is a major component being replaced rather than just a thumbstick.

You should look on IFixIt for proper disassembly instructions. Before attempting to perform modifications/maintenance on the device.
Side Note: Although they use a spudger, I’ve had better results using my fingernail. However use a spudger for the audio ribbon, as that one is hard to reach.

never hurts to try and ask support how much they would charge for the fix, you are basing the price of the repair with parts sourced by scalpers probably

Just get someone to replace the connector on the daughter-board lol

Congratulations on the learning experience. Pity that it had to be an expensive one. A lot of smaller connectors have specific ways to release them. If you find that one isn't coming off with only a bit of force, stop and reevaluate the situation. Some are flip open as you discovered, but some the socket "unplugs" slightly to release the cable. There are others still
