Steam Deck

Steam Deck

How's the FPS experiences on Steam Deck?
I heard some people or even a few Youtubers using Gyro is the best aiming control, even in multiplayer. However, I feel trackpads are more friendly, especially if you once played FPS games on mobile. Joysticks are fine but not flexible as trackpads and gyro. Touchscreen imo, is broken in someway.

That just leaves me two controls are Gyro and Trackpads. Currently I'm using Trackpads but I'm wondering if it's worth to invest my time trying out Gyro?

The FPS games I play are both singleplayer and multiplayer/coop

Edit: my experience on my latest comment

You don't use gyro on its own (unless you really love spinning round in your chair. You do big turning with stick or trackpad (whichever you prefer) and fine turning with gyro. And, yes, it's very satisfying once you've got it dialled in.

Practise with something like the Portal games to get the hang of it.

dont want to look like an idiot who is swinging the device for playing games. Trackpads on the go then.
Precise aiming on this thing is really hard without a mouse

Gyro is not like that, if you set it up correctly with flick sticks you make only small movements for aiming, mine is set with 5.5x multiplier so every degree of movement of my deck is 5.5 degrees in games, you just need to practice and a few tricks like gyro ratcheting or flick sticks, don't be one of those guys that think that gyro is a Wii but with a normal controller :steamfacepalm:

Joysticks are still the way to go, especially when you have aim assist.

The problem with the trackpads is they are not wide enough, which is why I never consider them for fps games. You can play some solo games just fine, where you haven#t too much pressure for fine aiming, like dishonored.

For gyro it depends on what games you're playing. Aim assist heavy games will not benefit from gyro. I wouldn't even use it in such games, because gyro can interfere with the aim assist.

I'm wondering how people can REALLY aim with joysticks without using aim assist in singleplayer games. Games like RE7 I played recently (on Hardcore mode I think) took almost a hour to clear all the mold creatures with my only 9mm pistol while I could just get a key and go get a shotgun for better convenience

I understand you can set gyro like setting up mouse's sensitivity. Except the need to use my time to get used to gyro control until the result if I can use that control well or not

Therorically, I do know how it works but never once used it before. Like my previous comments about the gyro control, I'm just unsure gyro is worth my time or keep sticking with trackpads/joysticks

If you are willing to spend the time Gyro has the potential to be viable and competitive even against M&K with PvP, also I found that gyro controls felt natural to me and it took me like 5 minutes to surpass my own joystick aim that I was struggling with for almost 1 month. and now I feel I play as good on Gyro as I do on M&K in any game instead of joysticks that rely on dev having put autoaim mode aim assist
my advice is if you wanna try using gyro controls look guides on YT and get some tricks from experienced players and experiment a bit, I personally went full Gyro and flicksticks but nobody is stopping you from just having gyro as something to enhance your trackpad/stick aim

You can try this popular config.

Practice I guess. But it probably also depends on the game. Sometimes, games have terrible controller mechanics, for example dishonored 2 has very wonky aiming. Good controller games let you change settings like the response curve, deadzones etc...

Here's a tip: If a game has bad controller mechanics, create your own: Use the steam controller settings, output joystick as a mouse, and setup your own response curve (relaxed, wide, custom ...).

So I spent almost a year trying to aim with joystick and I'm already comfortable with it. It is a good experience once you get used to it. It's not flexible as playing with mouse but since in some cases when you bring steam deck outside or in situation where you can not bring your mouse along then the joysticks are good, especially if playing singleplayer shooter games. And most of all, I turn off aim assist on every games I play if it has controller support.
Gyro was a viable option but a bit stupid if using outside. For trackpads, I decide to use only in games that have no controller support or the aiming on joystick was so bad I have to rely on the pads.

In summary, just spend some times whether is gyro or joystick. The result on either of those are the same, you will get used to it and feel more comfortable when playing games with it
