Practise with something like the Portal games to get the hang of it.
Precise aiming on this thing is really hard without a mouse
Gyro is not like that, if you set it up correctly with flick sticks you make only small movements for aiming, mine is set with 5.5x multiplier so every degree of movement of my deck is 5.5 degrees in games, you just need to practice and a few tricks like gyro ratcheting or flick sticks, don't be one of those guys that think that gyro is a Wii but with a normal controller
The problem with the trackpads is they are not wide enough, which is why I never consider them for fps games. You can play some solo games just fine, where you haven#t too much pressure for fine aiming, like dishonored.
For gyro it depends on what games you're playing. Aim assist heavy games will not benefit from gyro. I wouldn't even use it in such games, because gyro can interfere with the aim assist.
my advice is if you wanna try using gyro controls look guides on YT and get some tricks from experienced players and experiment a bit, I personally went full Gyro and flicksticks but nobody is stopping you from just having gyro as something to enhance your trackpad/stick aim
I never figure out how to configure it

You can try this popular config.

Here's a tip: If a game has bad controller mechanics, create your own: Use the steam controller settings, output joystick as a mouse, and setup your own response curve (relaxed, wide, custom ...).
Gyro was a viable option but a bit stupid if using outside. For trackpads, I decide to use only in games that have no controller support or the aiming on joystick was so bad I have to rely on the pads.
In summary, just spend some times whether is gyro or joystick. The result on either of those are the same, you will get used to it and feel more comfortable when playing games with it
