Forgot my sudo password. steam deck is all I have at the moment. Am I done?
That's my question. Everything I see either says completely factory reset, or do some sort of thing with a Windows PC and USB cable. Which I completely ignore as I don't have a PC at the moment. Is there some other way of resetting the password?

how is any of this valves fault if you mess with system related passwords? LMAO.

picture this, you forgot your passcode for your safe with all your jewlery/gold/investments, and now youre upset that you have to destroy the safe to get in there again?

dont mess with the system password if you dont want it to be a possibility of you loosing it, this has and will have nothing to do with valve. theres a reason that theres disclaimers before putting a new sudo password and in several guides to not change it if you dont know what youre doing

I didn't even mean to change it! It came up asking me and I set the device down to look it up on my phone and ACCIDENTALLY entered something. Maybe know what happened in my situation before being a jerk.
you were being irresponsible. it's your device, it's on you.

The line you need to type to set a sudo pass is impossible to do it accidental.

i have nearly the same problem.

i think i know my PW but if i want to change it in console with the "passwd" command i can not type with my keyboard any letter?!?!
if i press three times "enter" it appears that Authentication failure - password unchanged.

I could change the Steam Deck User PW and i thought the second pw he want to know is my SUDO PW?

When typing passwords into the terminal, it won‘t display them. That‘s intended.

Keep in mind to test your keyboard layout in terminal before changing your password(s).

The process is
passwd
<current user pw><enter>
<new user pw><enter>
<new user pw><enter>

I seriously don't understand how this community is filled with this many morons.

I went to install a program to which it came up TELLING ME to CHANGE my sudo password! Let me repeat for the idiots, it told me to change it.

I clicked into the area to change the password, but stopped and then set down my steam deck to look up what this password was on my phone. While setting it down I accidentally pressed something and it entered what I had accidentally pressed as my new CHANGED password. Now I cannot download anything to my steam deck, because I don't know what I entered. So it is IN FACT possible to enter a password by accident. It happened to me. Was it error on my part? Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that it shows up when it shouldn't and ASKS you to change it! It shouldn't even show up if you don't even actually need to use it. VALVE has to program it in this way, so it IS their fault that it shows up. They should re-code it to only show up if you have it set to show up and have it off by default. Also, needs to be an easier way to reset the password. Factory reset didn't work for me. Shouldn't be forced to re-image just for a password that it shouldn't be asking you to engage with in the first place. It's stupid plain and simple. (No matter what any of you say) :steamdeadpan:

Absolutely nothing by default needs a sudo password. System software is installed as a complete image - which doesn't require a password - and everything from Discover is a user-mode flatpak - which doesn't require a password. You have decided to go off-piste, you have decided to set a sudo password, and you have then decided to change it to something else, which you apparently chose to select by blindly pressing buttons at random.

If you put your deck down and accidentally touch a key... I mean.... how do you even hold your deck? do you hold it with your fingers on the screen at all times instead of the handles? i don't see how you can accidentally type something while setting the deck down but let's say that's what happened. shouldn't you have then had to press enter or something afterwards to confirm?

@_Deck_Cyborg_, there is no „sudo password“. It‘s the „user password“ which is set/changed.
How do I run sudo commands?

The default deck user is shipped with no password. This is a secure setting that prevents access via ssh, and can't be used to run commands via sudo.

If you’d like to set a password in order to run sudo commands, open a terminal window and set a secure password using the passwd command. At that point you will be able to use sudo anywhere elevation is required.

Found a really helpful video to change password without any os recovery image steps. You just need a usb keyboard.

Check out this video really helpful🤩

if you used decky it auto sets your sudo pass to ''Decky!'' caps important as-well as the ! symbol.

Curious question as i have just mentioned Decky is program that auto sets a sudo password and only requires you to press the A button to continue. If you hit A thats it. No redo. I am a H.I.T and an S.M.T. so i really dont understand how any of you feel that you have the right to post in any need help thread with such nasty ego driven remarks to those needing help. If you do not know the solution and or not also having a similar problem then you have no place here. Be better people, this is just sad. You know why you are.
