Steam Deck

Accidentally made all of my programs "open" instead of "execute"
While i was in desktop mode, i was trying to open a program and accidentally selected "open" instead of "execute", which now opens a terminal through Kate instead of running the program.

I've seen people use some kind of "chmod" command in the Konsole, but it only seems to work for programs one at a time, and it doesn't seem to work with Steam Rom Manager (or i'm inputting it wrong)

Regardless, I would really appreciate help in reverting this so SteamOS executes the program instead of showing me the code.

Thank you.

1. Open Dolphin (the KDE/Desktop file manager)
2. Click on the three lines/burger icon in the top right hand corner
3. Click on configure near the bottom, this will slide out another menu, now select Configure Dolphin (or you could potentially skip the above steps and just press Ctrl+Shift+,)
4. Select the third tab, Confirmations
5. Change the behaviour "When opening an executable file" to Always ask, or execute, your choice.

Done.

It's probably a mimeapps file or similar, probably in your ~/.config directory, that stores those associations that you've made. Once you've found it you can edit it or delete it to get rid of the entry that you don't want.

the config directory is a hidden folder you can access via your file explorer, or dolphin in steamos' case (not to be mistaken with the emulator)

through there you will find a a file log of every change you consented to on the desktop, and by finding the right file, you can delete it; and by deleting it, the system will act as if you never pressed anything, thus giving you the prompt again upon trying to execute a program

Do you remember which file you deleted? There are lots of files in that folder

Honestly, I couldn’t tell you as if I recall correctly, they’re named very randomly.

BUT I do have a hint that might help you. (Also sorry for the late reply)

If you go into the config folder, you can use the file explorer to sort by date (which I believe is default), so if you can remember the date/time that you made the change, that will likely be the file that you need to delete.

Lastly, I’m not recommending this so please understand that this is at your own risk, but another thing to do would be to either delete all of those files or factory reset and try again.
