Steam Deck

I guess the Honeymoon is over...
Got my Steam Deck Q3 last year when you had to pre-order them, was happy to receive and begin playing my games, I played on it until about Xmas, then I went back to desktop and hadn't been on it since, 6 months passed and I decided to get it out of its hard case, plugged it in to charge, left it 3 hours, pressed power button, Nothing.

I've tried holding power button for 12 seconds, I get the Beep, then I press power again to turn it on, Nothing, I've tried holding Volume + Power, I get the beep but still nothing, I know its charging because I see the white power light and I've hooked it upto my 65w power bank and its slowly depleting it, Was working great 6 months ago, now its had a sleep its decided to never wake up again... Looks like the Honeymoon is over.

Any suggestions or is it going back to Valve for a replacement?

Seriously? They expect us to manually repair it our selves? I hope you're joking, if the battery has failed, it's going back for a refund, its still in warranty until September.

hehe, I do not know.. honestly, for the millionth time I have no affiliation with valve.. emm.. from what some are saying is just if you send it back now they will send you a refurbished unit... emm.. hehehe.. I dont think buying a replacement battery is that expensive ?.. $10 ? hehehe... or just hehehe, I do not know... keep plugging it in and hoping for the best ? :)
Ifixit has them, £85 ($109). I'll be sending it back to them then, I'm not attempting self repair, I barely use it and kinda regret buying it so I'm gonna attempt a return and refund RMA. I know it only ever charges to 99% to preserve battery live, it also auto de-charges when not used to also keep the battery healthy, but it shouldn't have broke down already, I only used it for about 30 hours before leaving it for 6 months and fully charged from flat.

You'll need to open a support ticket with Valve regardless.

In the meantime, have you tried putting the battery into shipping mode? People have reported that that can fix charging/turning on issues. I think the procedure is this if you're not getting anything on the screen to do it the menu-driven way (not tried it myself).

- With the power supply plugged in, shut down the unit from Steam > Power. Check that the unit is completely off. There should be no haptic feedback from the trackpads.

- Hold Volume+ and Quick Access (...) for 10 seconds. Then unplug the power supply while still holding those buttons down.

- If done correctly, the LED should flash 3 times. A quick press of the power button should produce no response.

- To wake your Steam Deck from shipping mode, plug in the provided power supply and power it on normally.

Only issue is, I can't turn it off, I am unable to see anything, I know it's on because the haptics give feedback, I've tried holding the button for 12 seconds but that restarts it, I don't know how to fully shut it down with a button press

Can you plug it up to an external monitor (USB-C to HDMI) and the follow WarnerCK's suggestions?

The battery is not meant to be stored away for that long on sleep or simply turned off.

Unfortunately you may have not known this, but there's a battery storage mode you MUST use if you aren't going to use the Steam Deck for an extended period of time (I suppose about a week).

What may have happened is that your battery ran out of charge completely while it was stored away, and now that it's been like that for as long as you have said; the battery is basically dead now unfortunately.

There's a very slim chance your Deck battery COULD be fine, but if it's been 6 months I'd say it's as good as dead. If you do whatever you can to try and charge it up and you don't get anything, you're going to have to either RMA your Deck or if you're confident enough and you can get the part, replace it yourself.

Sorry my dude but this is how it is :\

If I had to guess, those beeps you're getting are just the last remnants of life that it has lol

That's crazy to me, I've never had to do that with any other chargeable device, phones, laptops etc, I've not used my Switch for over a year, powers on just fine even from a depleted state after charging, I'm currently in contact with Steam about an RMA anyway and hopefully I'll get a refund, I barely use it, bought it on a whim and as good as it was, I'm always at my Desktop anyway. Thanks for the info though, appreciated. Oh, and the Haptics are still working away even after the beep, don't they need power to work? I have left it way over an hour and it is still showing life signs even when not plugged in/charging.

Yep, tried several, also tried several different outlets as per Steams suggestion, removed the SD card etc, I made no software or hardware modifications other than the official Steam Updates. Only used and played Steam Library games, installed nothing else.

by trickle charge I mean plug into a usb 2 port ?.. emm... should be low enough amps iirc, . just at least to give it a little start and see if it comes back to life, then you can move on to 1 amp then 2 amp etc. seriously best of luck ? :)

" The USB 1.x and 2.0 specifications provide a 5 V supply on a single wire to power connected USB devices.

A unit load is defined as 100 mA in USB 2.0, and 150 mA in USB 3.0. A device may draw a maximum of 5 unit loads (500 mA) from a port in USB 2.0; 6 (900 mA) in USB 3.0."

The power mechanism is likely not ideal for this type of use case. This is closer to R/C lipos in which if you are not using them for a while, you put them into storage charge. Valve has mentioned this in their documentation:

https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/69E3-14AF-9764-4C28

Long term storage
If you won't be using your Steam Deck for a while and would like to place it back into storage mode to increase long term battery health, you can use the following steps to do so:
Power the Steam Deck down normally (choose Shut Down from the Power menu)
Hold down the Volume+ button and press the power button. The Steam Deck should boot into the BIOS menu.
Using the D-Pad and A to select, navigate to "Setup Utility"
Navigate to the Power Menu
Choose Battery storage mode, and confirm.

You should see the Steam Deck power off, and the power LED will blink three times to confirm battery storage mode has been activated.

To wake your Steam Deck from storage mode, plug in the provided power supply and power it on normally.

But it says "place it back into storage mode to increase long term battery health"... "INCREASE Long term battery health" not "PREVENT battery death"... Either way, it's ridiculous that it hasn't even lasted 10 months from new. It's getting RMA'd anyway, hopefully for refund.

Its likely the battery has fallen lower than the 2V/cell threshold looking at that timescale. It might be possible to wake with a gentle trickle charge. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm gonna try it with some USB-C cables without an adaptor over the next 12 hours whilst I'm arranging the RMA with Valve. if it kicks back in I'll keep but if it's a Hot Fig Newton I'm gonna send it back hopefully for refund.
