Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Hooking Steam dock to my laptop.
I have a dell Alienware gaming laptop and tried to hook the dock up to it to run on my laptop. I tried it many different ways and no luck. What are the proper cable to use from the dock to the laptop? I'm apparently missing something.

use it to play thru the Alienware, also to navigate setting on a bigger screen.

Not even the HDMI display cable? I can just plug into my dell docking station that my gaming monitor is thru. I was just trying to play through the lap top since my game room is inhabited with out of town family for a month... Which sucks

why not just run steam on ur labtop? this makes no sense even if ur trying some duel display with deck in desktop mode, that said (dont understand why) but unless ur labtop has a hdmi in, not sure how u can get it to what u want, usually the pc wont recognize the deck since its a linux os (tried to transfer some games) and it showed up unknown drive

Right, I read about the Linux os and windows issue. I just got the deck and was just trying to use the larger screen to go thru the settings while setting up Origin, Proton GE etc. I appreciate your responses

hmm I found this on the internet:

Nearly every laptop has an HDMI port but all of them have an HDMI output port which means that using the HDMI out will only send the video and audio signals. So, in that case a port conversion is required, so a capture card can serve the purpose

This.

Computers only output video, never take in video. You can buy capture cards to do this but they will vary in price from just under $100 to well over $200.

Both the Steam Deck and your laptop are designed to output video to a display device connected over HDMI. Neither of them are independent display devices; connecting one's HDMI port directly to the other will not do anything.

You can buy a cheap HDMI to USB video capture device that will do what you want for around $30; you can plug the Deck's HDMI output into that, then plug the capture device's USB port into your laptop, and use video recording software like OBS to view the video stream, but keep in mind that there will be a slight amount of lag over the connection.
