Steam OS official release?
was wondering, I've been mucking about with my steam deck now since I got it a month or so ago. I am finding I am really really enjoying the OS in general and would love to use it as my main OS on my gaming rig, has valve said anything about releasing the OS to the general public like they did with the previous iterations of the OS or is this going to be a steam deck thing only?

I've seen some people have managed to rip it and upload it in the community but I was meaning more in an official capacity, I'll do that only if I absolutely have to haha.

When it's ready to be released, they will announce it.

While you're waiting for the release, if you want to play around with desktop Linux, you can grab the image of any distro. I'd recommend Kubuntu as a good starting point, since it has the same KDE desktop as the Deck, has good third-party support, and a sensible release schedule. Or any other that catches your eye, of course. You can just boot it from a USB thumb drive without affecting anything else on your computer. Should you find that you enjoy using Linux, a distro that isn't SteamOS would probably be a better choice for general computer stuff than SteamOS itself.

What is pop os lacking in your opinion? I’ve been using it since late 2020 with Xanmod. No complaints here.

what a question, for me I think it might be system specific, alsamixer doesnt like my sound card the sound blaster Z and its a constant hassle, that being said I dont even know if another distro would fix the issue. thus far for me at least the steam OS desktop has seemed like a nearly seamless transition from windows, where I had a bit of a learning curve for pops.

manjaro kde should be the closest to steam os v3 you can try:
its also a rolling release based in arch. updating the os, intalling stuff, and so on, will work the same in the deck (with the right system persmissions).

If you like SteamOS but can't wait for Valve (who seem in no rush) then there is the unofficial HoloISO which is 99.9999% SteamOS, totally stable, and works great if you're running exclusively Zen/Vega, or better, AMD hardware.

Currently running it on my custom built gaming rig, connected permanently to my large screen UHD TV. I do not miss the PS4 Pro or XBox Series X in any way, in fact I think this is giving me a superior gaming experience. Especially in the flexibility with emulation.
