I too would be interested in what this EB Games rumour is about.
But Valve Software won't even let us do that... My Steam account is quite literally blocked from making a purchase, meaning my only alternative[/i] is to buy it from some shady third-party and hope that it works with my 'Steam' account (some people are claiming it won't work with a 'Steam' account if they Steam Deck is not available in your region).
Kogan also included a 3rd party Australian 45W power to USB-C brick, presumably as some kind of legal requirement - which is weird because there was no USB-C cable included that would work with it - the official Valve one does not detach from the wall connector. I've yet to do anything with it.
Connecting the Deck to my Australian Steam account was seamless. There were no problems that came up at all. The only issue is that I filled up that 512G in no time with all the games I wanted to try on it, and had to get a big microSD card as well.
I think most Australians interested in the Deck (based on my own experience at least) have either already imported it, or are already in the process of figuring out the best way to get it. It was just last week that I overheard someone express the difficulty they were having in figuring out how to get it, so I pointed them to Kogan. Problem solved. Word's getting around.
When Valve finally launches it in Australia (if they ever really do), I suspect it'll be too late for it to matter. Except for the official Dock. I'm still waiting on someone to sell that here.
F*ck Valve.
Works a charm and have been chipping away at some nice backlog during work lunch hours and while on the go :)
Haven't quite filled mine up yet, but then I'm just using it for some large JRPG's like Octopath Traveller 2 and some smaller indies so far.
I just grabbed some HDMI to USB-C cable from Amazon for a tenner and that works as-is
I was looking and Skull & Co. originally since I've used them for my Switch stuff in the past and had a good impression of their hardware, but honestly this simple cable is fine for the moment.
The issue for me is that I have very little space on my TV stand for a Deck (with all the other consoles already there), and I don't want it to fall off! A stand or dock would be safer than, for example, dumping the Deck on my Saturn (which isn't flat) or wedging it between the Gamecube and Series X... well I'm sure it'll make its way here eventually.

They also sell the official dock (with a markup of course):

Plus the genuine and official 45W charger was certified for Australia and New Zealand-Valve support confirmed as such to me but not available as a spare part from iFixit.
The official dock is apparently meant to cost $89 USD, which converts to $132 AUD. In other words, the listings on ♥♥♥♥ Smith are selling at close to 60% more than RRP.
Valve did say that they would sell to Australia and NZ soon, and it's only been a few years since they said it. Valve is a small company. We just need to be patient.
I half suspect that this is in part related to the culture at Valve, where employees can work on whatever they want. Since Valve is a US country, probably very few employees care about what happens outside of US (and especially countries that don't have a huge population). They don't make much money (if anything) on the device either so there's not even any financial interest.
Valve product releases in Australia and NZ have been mismanaged way too many times for it to be a coincidence. If they cared, Valve would be shipping it already. Even if we had to pay a ton in shipping fees (which we're used to for things like this anyway), I have no doubt they would have made it happen.
It's more to do with the costs, import fees are high and they are already aggressively priced so they eats up the little profit they'd get.
I believe previous release they did in Australia went thru eb games where they bought the products and resold them
On the other hand, Evercade sells theough Pixel Crib here, which is a small online-only store based in an inner Melbourne suburb. They're frequently out of stock so there's usually wait times involved, but it's much cheaper for the customer. How can they do it then if import costs are so high? Their pricing is quite reasonable IMO too.
The only practical difference for Valve would be the AU/NZ power plug, since most of the above devices don't supply one (or just ship a US/UK plug because they're small enough to get away with it)... but come on. They can make an OLED model but can't make a new plug? There is no excuse.
When Woolies are even selling them online it's not really a rarity or some FOMO thing anymore. (My retailer threw in a free AU Wall Socket USB C charging adapter too to circumvent the yank plug that they come with)
As for the actual reason? Who knows. We get shafted on the VR stuff too.
Is Gaben throwing a tantrum and still mad that *mean Australia* forced policy change with our awesome consumer laws, which caused the customer-enacted refund policy to become a thing on Steam and is now taking it out on the whole country's userbase like a spoiled child?
Maybe.. unless the big man himself decides to actually address the real reason and stop being tight lipped about it that's my headcanon.
Here's the ERAC certification for the official 45W charger-basically the same as the US/UK/EU charger sold on iFixit in those region stores but with an AU/NZ plug:

Have no clue to what kind of charger the JB Hi-Fi NZ ones comes with though and JB Hi-Fi Australia doesn't seem to sell any sort of Steam Deck unlike JB NZ.
I got mine from Kogan (but yes I see the 64GB model is on Woolworths Everyday Market from resellers). They bundled in a 3rd party charger with mine (probably due to legal requirements?) but funnily enough did not include a cable (and the US charger cable does not detach) so have always used the official charger with a travel power board I found in my building's ewaste bin that has international power plug sockets.
The price of the official Dock via Kogan is outrageous and I won't pay it (although I'd like one). Valve are essentially supporting skelpers by providing no alternatives, which is troubling.
I couldn't find the charger on iFixit here, but it seems like they should try to find a way to sell one, if possible.
