Steam Deck

Steam Deck

Dual-booting Windows not actually supported?
Just one of the many things that people on steam pay for and don't get or use?

I was under the impression that Steam Deck could dual boot, but now everything I'm reading says that's not true.

That's adding another straw to the camel's back.

Dual-Boot with SteamOS not yet available
  • Installing Windows requires you to wipe your Steam Deck, and dual-boot with SteamOS is not currently available.
  • While Steam Deck is fully capable of dual-boot, the SteamOS installer that provides a dual-boot wizard isn't ready yet. This will ship alongside SteamOS 3 once it's complete.

You can definitely dual-boot SteamOS+Windows.

You can definitely dual-boot SteamOS+Windows.

Everything I'm reading says that's not possible now, but I thought I saw youtube videos saying you can do it.

That being said, there's no guarantee that it's not clickbait, will work now or in the future or that Steam won't change things.

I bought a Steam controller and I can never get it to work and I feel like this will just be another time I'm getting screwed over and ripped off by Valve and take my business else where.

It's already bad enough dealing with socially awkward mods and obnoxious children.

I don't even care that people cheat because it's just online video games.

Right on, man.

You can definitely dual-boot I'm doing it right now. Here's the tutorial I used with some minor tweaks to the process. Worth doing to have access to Game Pass.

Nice, thanks.

Good to hear confirmation from somebody it can be done.

But then again, everybody says replacing a shell on a Nintendo Switch is easy except every tutorial skips over the digitizer.

I wouldn't say it's easy the first time. Probably rate it medium to hard difficulty. Once you've done it and have the drives setup it gets much easier.

Here's a link to a text version of the dual-boot process I did here on community forums. It has the links you need to do the complete process. If you have any questions just let me know.

Ah, ok.

I've dual booted my laptop and I'm not totally technology illiterate, but like in security, it might not be impossible to do it, but a big enough deterrent and it's the same difference.

Does that make sense?

It's a little frustrating that I bought a Steam controller and I can almost never get it to work but I bought some other random controller on Amazon and it works great.
The thing about the Deck that sets it apart from other consoles and makes things waaaay easier is that it's not vendor-locked

You CAN replace the entire OS by something else (and it's a normal PC/laptop hardware in most repects, so there are no significant caveats to it) and Valve won't try to lock you out, sue, void warranty or in any way reprimend you for doing so

Get a normal PC linux distro like Ubuntu or it's more noob-friendly derivate Linux Mint on a liveboot pendrive and use that at will...

Wipe SteamOS 3 from the internal drive and replace it for Win10...

Repartition the drive and dualboot Win10 and whatever linux distro you want... etc, etc, etc

You'll be missing a few hardware-specific optimizations and console-oriented tweaked interfaces, but you can certainly put it to use paired with a kbd+mouse+monitor/tv, external controller, etc

Then just burn the recovery .iso to an usb stick after you're done playing around with windows or other linux distros meant for PCs and you can get back to SteamOS 3 without issues

Also, as posted above, there is no EASY way to setup SteamOS 3 as dualboot but it CAN be stitched together since it's basically just linux on a PC with minor exclusive tweaks and the bootloader is the usual BIOS/UEFI solution found in PCs/laptops, which can't be broken by formatting or replacing or even blanking the OS in the internal storage

heck, that's in a specific chip in the mainboard so it's not even harmed by phisically pulling out the internal ssd unit, LOL! don't ever try pulling that off with an android phone unless you're willing to turn it into an expensive brick!

Go away, troll.
Didn't work for me. When I updated SteamOS the boot loader got all messed uo and it would no longer boot into Steam even if I manually selected the boot file, it just went into Windows. It is unsupported for a reason.

Nuts.

If I can't dual boot, then I don't want the deck.
Dual booting, although it is not officially supported yet through the SteamOS installer, is actually very easy to setup. I'd recommend not using the custom bootloader method as that is just a unnecessary pain (in my opinion), especially when Windows installs updates and messes up the custom bootloader EFI entry. I followed this method without a custom bootloader, and I don't have that Windows Update headache. https://youtu.be/3Pfo_q4agCw
The only thing I change from his video is the label for the EFI entry. I change that -L "SteamOS" portion to -L "SteamOS_EFI" so I know which one to click on the bootloader screen (SteamOS_EFI). You can change the label to whatever you want, I just would not call it "SteamOS" because then you will have 2 EFI entries with that name and you may forget which is the correct one to load into SteamOS properly.
Oh, nice.

Thank you very much, jlobue10
Every single game I have wanted to play has worked. You can even get the Epic and GOG storefronts working if you want to, but you could just use Heroic instead. Proton is absolutely amazing and Steam delivered on their promise with this. Why dual boot Windows? It is an unnecessary hassle. The only benefit I can think of is game pass.
