Steam Deck in Desktop Mode Rotated Incorrectly
Hi everyone!

First time posting, I think. I will be happy to provide more details if needed.

The issue showed itself today when I tried to show my friend a desktop mode on the Steam Deck. Displayed desktop was rotated 90 degrees in "No Rotation" option. After some restarts and trying out different settings, it became landscape in "90 degrees Clockwise" option. It is also not showing a 1280x800 (16x10) resolution, instead there is 800x1280 (5x8).

It is really annoying that every time I will want to do something in the Desktop Mode, I will need to change an orientation of the screen. What's even more surprising is that it all started to happening after I flashed the Steam OS from the recovery image provided on the Support's page. Right out of the box it was a flawless experience.

Have anyone encountered something like this? Or even have found a permanent solution? Or maybe I should contact Steam Support directly?

Thank you for your time in advance!

The screen is an 800×1280 screen; the out-of-the-box setup is just to have the display settings pre-rotated. I haven't played with the other rotations to see how persistent they might be.

Okay, but shouldn't it show correct resolution, aspect ratio along with rotation there? - Desktop Mode > System Settings > Display and Monitor > Display Configuration

It is confusing. What it is doing is making people think, like I am, that something is wrong. Also, I haven't noticed Steam Deck booting in portrait mode only to change to landscape before I re-image it. It is certainly more confusing than it should be. I just wanted to return to clean installation and I ended up with a subpar experience for seemingly no reason at all.

It does show the correct resolution. The big display at the top shows 1280×800 in a picture of the orientation of the screen.

The details section underneath correctly says that internally it's an 800×1280 screen (one of many many portrait screens made for phones and tablets). That section also correctly says that the display (and mouse pointer) have been rotated 90° anti-clockwise. You can see that happen in the first couple of seconds of the desktop session.

5:8 and 10:16 are exactly the same ratio; the mathematical 8:5 ratio gets corrected to 16:10 to be more familiar, just as the not-quite-21:9 ratios and the like get corrected to something more familiar. Could 5:8 be similarly corrected? Sure. It might be worth your filing a bug report with the KDE folks to suggest it.

I've filed a bug report for you.

They've put in a fix now, so that should be in the next version of KDE, and that will come to the Deck in due course.

Is this still the case? That when you switch to desktop mode it's in portrait orientation? Because we can probably set it to not do that if that's what you're experiencing.

Was this fixed? I just encountered this by using AnyDesk to remote into my Steam Deck then selected the "Auto-Adapt resolution" inside of AnyDesk. In my Steam Deck Display and Monitor, I am not sure if the resolution originally showed resolution 800x1280 (5:8) and orientation "90 degrees Counterclockwise"

Seems odd for sure.

Here's a whole thread on Reddit regarding this: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/tujzzx/my_desktop_has_rotated_90_degrees_please_help/

PEACE OF MIND FOR THOSE EXPERINCING THIS: After some referencing of friends Steam Deck Resolutions and Rotations it appears that this is normal.

I'm sure there is some coding reason to do it in 800x1280(5:8) with a Rotation set to 90 degrees counterclockwise. Intuitively, I wanted to make it no rotation and 1280x800.

Worry not friends, the (5:8) janky rotation is corrrect. :)

I just encountered the same issue as described here and on Reddit. Screen rotated 90 degrees when plugged in to the TV for the first time. The "workaround" is to set the screen counter clockwise 90 degrees. However, I'd like to see a genuine fix. Are there any updates regarding this issue?

Just happened to me when trying to run the original octodad, hoping I can fix this, but I’m struggling to understand these comments.

Edit: fixed it, hoping it does not go back to the half size and upside down mode upon restarting, but now I know how to fix it.
Weird that the original ocotodad would cause this in the first place tho.

This is the fix. Go to System settings -> Display and Monitor, which will land you on the page you'll need to make the adjustment on. Make sure that your orientation is set to the icon on the far right - looks like a monitor with the base on the right side of the screen.

Good luck.
