But you do need sudo, and to have made the filesystem writable, to make the program executable, since it isn't for some reason. Same for the similar thumbstick_cal. Maybe they'll fix it in a future update. I trust that you've filed a bug report, and contacted the author of the ifixit guide that you're following? I'm sure you already know that chmod +x is a way to add the execute permission.
Not that you need to calibrate the triggers unless you've replaced them, of course.
