Emulators and Xbox Games and Game Pass on Steam deck
Please the only reason i took the steam deck is to play my J-RPG's and emulators of all kind.
So would it be possible on linux to run emulators like PCSX2, RPCS3 or Citra 3DS on the steam desk?
I have a second question about the xbox gamepass or xbox games own, is there gon be a way to play our own xbox PC games or from the game pass on the Steam Deck at the launch of it???

Emulators will work on linux, game pass won't as it requires an UWP app to use.

Gamepass streaming will work through the browser, though.

Do you know if it'll be powerful enough to run Tales of Xillia from RPCS3? or Bravely Default from Citra 3DS?

Emulators work,
You will probably get Xbox game pass to work for cloud gaming since MS have already had and played with a SteamDeck

I'll get myself a Windows on an SD card. That'll run Game Pass just fine.

I wouldn't expect Windows to run well off one.

There is people running Windows off SD cards, and it runs fine. I am willing to bet their storage benchmarks don't come anywhere close to an average NVMe drive, but I'd rather run Killing Floor 2 under Proton anyway. Windows' main problem is it sucking horribly off HDDs, but modern SD cards are way superior to all things HDD (coming to nobody's surprise).
Although, I'd love to see how fast the Steam Deck can drive them. I remember it supporting the UHS1 standard, but that's basically a protocol version. I hope there will be more storage benchmarks than Valve's own (which show games loading just fine from SD cards as well) when the Deck starts shipping.

Just a theoretical question. I'm not pinning hopes on this, just wondering, in my ignorance of Linux and UWP, whether it's possible.

Could MS get Gamepass working in Linux? Some sort of reduced OS run in a VM environment? Guessing that, anything is possible, is the immediate answer. Would doing this be economically/time feasible?

if they wanted and cared, yes.

ms doesnt need to do anything like that: they just need to code a native version. it makes sense for every dev to improve compat with every plafom they want to reach to increase sales. linux is a type of os, and gamepass in essence is just a program.

ms is "allergic to llinux": its a brand thing. they wont make things easier for linux users as long as they are unable to have a tight control of users (or believe they can have enough influence over their behaviors). their official attitude has changed a bit, but only because linux evolves faster than them, and has a bigger influence over eveything but common users.

MS ported their SQL server to Linux using a library OS approach. Doing the same for games/XBox app is certainly possible, but not economically viable. There's heaps of server customers demanding Linux support, not so much for games.

Thanks. That's enlightening. I be learning stuff. :)

I agree that works against typical MS thinking. It just made me wonder that if SteamOS handhelds take off, especially in isolation of dual desktop and handheld ownership, maybe pushing gamepass to linux would be attractive to MS. Or maybe they'll be happy just selling games on Steam. Who knows. :)

Should Linux gain any substantial market share, I'd consider it likely. MS already sell games on Steam despite having an own store because that's where gamers are. Should Linux ever end up with an actual market share, yeah, likely.
