Download speed really slow on Deck
The max download speed I get over wifi currently is about 2 MB on my 350 Mbit line for downloading games in Steam. The weird thing is that I am pretty sure that when I got the Deck it went almost full speed, it has gotten worse the last few days. If I run speedtest from Chrome on the deck it also shows my full speed. I was thinking that it might be a problem with the SSD, as some of them can get slower when almost full, but I have ~60GB free, also 2 Mb/s would be really damn slow even then. Anyone with any ideas? (it's also not the Steam dl region)

Just to put my two cents in - same issue here, with multiple Decks (we have three decks in this house -- five "families" -- so good test market.

We use two separate AdGuard Home DNS servers, load balanced, on hardware that's no joke. I switched it to Parallel Requests instead of Fastest, and suddenly I'm hard up against the speed limits I've set.

To be clear, I switched the settings on our DNS servers, and the problem was fully resolved. Not sure if/how this helps others using OpenDNS/piHole/etc, but that's what I know.

I noticed that my steam deck downloaded slowly as well. Switching to Windows fixed it. Steam os is a buggy mess.

I literally found my way here while trying to troubleshoot the downloads being slow on the most recent single-drive dual-boot Windows mod I'm doing. Only putting Windows on it because one guy can't do without Destiny 2 or some crap like that. SteamOS literally has better hardware support for this device than Windows, because it was designed for/around Linux. Windows support is specifically and explicitly lacking on this hardware for similar reasons. You can't play games you like so you're complaining, that doesn't change reality much I'm afraid.

I never mentioned that it didn't. Windows is missing 8 drivers and after I'm done with the roofers tomorrow I'm going to do a modprobe into the hardware and find the open source drivers and compile them for Windows. That being said, steam downloads at 500+mb/s on Windows, on steam os it starts and stops and runs at 2-10.

Same issues, can't download faster than 25 mb/s. Went into download settings, selected the "display data in bits" option now I can do up to 180 mb/s. Wtf steam. $700 for this b.s.

Okay so -- that's still downloading at the exact same speed, my friend. It -displays- in bytes/sec until you switch it to -display- in bits/sec. 8 bit = 1 byte, so the number is 8x larger but it's literally the exact same actual speed. That's like converting from KPH to MPH -- still going the same speed, just measuring it differently.

Side note to the general public, the number you enter for "download speed limit" is in BITS PER SECOND on the Steam Deck / Steam OS, and it's in BYTES PER SECOND on Steam / Desktop (Windows) so when entering a download speed on Steam Deck, you need to enter it in BITS PER SECOND aka 1mbyte/sec is 8mbit/sec aka 8192 mbit/sec will get you 1024 mbyte/sec.
If you don't understand what I just said, it's okay -- not everyone understands math and computers and bits and bytes and all that. Just enter the number 8x what you want it to be in the Steam Deck download speed limit, but don't blame Valve.

I have the same issue. Download speed from wifi is like 1.5MB/s, Solution was to creat hotspot on laptop connect SD to laptop Hotspot then download speed sky rocket.

I wish it had an Ethernet port. I just want to play my games. Two days for Shadow of War. RIP my weekend. It's two feet from the router and still slow.

Ethernet adapters are actually very inexpensive, Lidl had them for 12€

I had run into a problem recently with the internet disconnecting during online play, had to enter dev mod and disable wifi power management.

Never had a problem since.

This actually worked for me...... LOL

It makes absolutely no sense but I could only download at a max of about 5mb/s until I went into "Settings" > "Downloads" and then flipping the switch on for "Display download rates in bits per second". I don't see how it made any difference but I was then able to download 5GB in about a minute or two minutes at 124mb/s. Before doing this it was going to take upwards of 20 minutes or more for the same download. Worth giving this a try...

Edit: My slow downloads have been happening day one since I received my SteamDeck. I have a 1GB ISP and have tried a wired 10/100/1000 USB-C dongle with no change until now. Thanks everyone!! 🤘

F-k Me it's working. Full speed on home wi-fi.
THX a lot.

I was getting excruciatingly slow download speeds yesterday, but today, I'm downloading at maximum. Changing the "bits per second" display didn't make any difference, so I assume there must have been network congestion yesterday.

I'm getting 13 MB/s on my Deck but only if I connect to my 5 Ghz WiFi setup... With my 2,4 Ghz WiFi setup I'm getting only 3-5 MB/s max.

PS: please, keep the units correct.

MB/s = MBytes/s
And there are
Mb/s = Mbits/s

1 MBytes/s = 8 Mbits/s

Thank you.

I don't get it anyway why we still have to use Mbit in 2023 for advertising the internetspeed.
