I really appreciate your answer; even if it's not what I wanted, or expected.
25th century and they don't know how to do it? We can do it even now; so that would be "old-school tech". A lot of divers carry a small backup tank with them, and it works just like that; hold your breath, swap out the tanks and you're good to go.
I think maybe it's something that can be considered at least. That way, a new player (like myself) can be prepared before going to the underdust.
I tried swapping them out prior to descending to the underdust; which you would think would fill it with oxygen. Sadly, that isn't the case. Perhaps we need a machine that can do it? A compressor maybe.
In fact, I haven't been able to upgrade my small tank to medium, even though I researched the tech. I will assume I need the upgrade bench for this?
Correct.
It wouldn't be a balance issue here, as the small and medium both take up 1 slot from the inventory, and there is no personal weight carry dynamic (not sure about the harder difficulty levels, but on easy you don't)
I would like to see:
1. O2 collector -> maybe it's tainted air, like the dev did with the water, and it needs to be filtered and stored. -> It would also need to be placed outside.
2. O2 filtration system
3. O2 compressor -> to fill tanks
4. The ability to carry extra tanks (filled)
5. Tanks that have the fill % listed
Divers pearl fruit > liquid oxygen stored in a bottle.
On the other hand, all the underdust areas have plenty of breath nuts scattered around so you rarely need more oxygen to begin with.
As mentioned, the game already has a mechanism for portable oxygen refills (three, actually: petting the pet bug, Breathnuts, and Liquid Oxygen). I think the current systems fit with the game's general mechanisms and the overall game feel better than your suggestion; the emphasis everywhere else is on harvesting raw resources from plants and processing them into the desired product, rather than using machinery to create products directly from inorganic resources.
Okay; if that was the intention; I laud that, and in fact; I would say the devs have done a great job making the game in general. But the fact is; machinery already exists; in the engines, water collector, metal collector, food collector, water purifier and all of the crafting benches that you use to build basically everything in and around the airship. What would be the difference between "collecting" the air using an intake and purifying it, and doing the same with the water vapor from the atmosphere?
Yes, you have to "find" the resources/scavenge, but it still requires those crafting benches to transform them into usable products, so tech is just as much a part of the game as the natural elements they've created.
To get back to the point, wasn't aware of the "pet bug" thing; and I do suppose I will try and figure out how to do it; but in regards to the rest:
Breathnuts: Yes, they are there, and yes, I use them, but once the supply in a local area is gone; it is gone. I like exploring the areas to get/see everything, and after a bit, it becomes a bit tedious having to go back to the last oxygenator to refill, just to go back to what I was doing and waste 20/30 seconds round trip.
*Yes, I am growing them aboard my ship, but I am not growing enough to supply all of my needs as yet. This could be a good way to have an alternative to an O2 tank that can be swapped out; though with a medium tank (150 seconds), it would take 3 breathnuts per refill (50 seconds/ea.), so not that efficient all said, at least compared to just swapping out another medium tank in one shot.
Liquid Oxygen: Have not found a seed for the diver's pearls as yet, so growing them isn't plausible at the moment, and I have found (thus far) only 1 place that even has them (that underdust location with the trade depot); which requires exploration to find them, hence the need for using other things first.
So I still stand by my original idea. I believe that even if they "just" added the ability to swap out tanks; even if it means we have to "prime them" by connecting them to our suit so they fill, then it would be a net benefit to players. It will diversify the options of how players might play their game, tell the story for themselves in a way that makes them happy. It also wouldn't "add" new machines to the game; but use the existing systems.
Liquid oxygen gives 100 oxygen per use.
3 fruits make 5 charges.
A large bottle holds 20 charges.
That is 10 large oxygen tanks in one inventory slot.
How is growing the plant and processing the fruit any different to having a machine that refills tanks.
And how is not having found the seed anything different to not having found the blueprint for the "refill machine"?
And we haven't even touched on oxygen boosters...
What's wrong with wanting something "just cause"? It's not different at all, it's just another way to do the same thing; and offers a bit of logical realism to the game. Imagine if a player is unlucky on the RNG, and cannot find the seeds they need in a reasonable amount of time and exploration, then I feel there should be a way hard-coded into the game to get to that next level of oxygen management, or simply make each playthrough a bit different.
This is a game, not real life. There are going to be differences between what you think would work and what will work in the game. Especially in a crafting/survival game. It's just something that you're going to have to live with, no matter the game.
There is already a way to get a stupidly large amount of oxygen with you via liquid oxygen in large bottles, as stated before. Asking for yet another mechanic to accomplish the same thing would take dev time away from doing something actually new and interesting.
I won't go so far as to say that it is wrong to want something, but what you want doesn't appreciably add to the game so it's unlikely to be added in. You can, of course, continue to complain about this thing you want, but the more you do it the less the people around here will respect you. You made your request, just leave it at that.
The crafting progression could definitely use some polish. A lot of it doesn't make sense where you build things and sometimes what they require. For example, I'm not a fan of printing medicines from your suit. They seem like the sort of thing you've need to get specialized equipment to make. Maybe just bandages and splints and such.
I do like the idea of being able to directly make different sizes of things, but I'd like that to only be the case if there's some use for differently-sized things like the small/large garden plots where they have different capabilities. Or where you may need to make a lot of them, also like the small/large garden plots.
