Not understanding pipes
So I have a water storage that I dump impure water in. I ran a pipe out of it.

I'm trying to get that pipe up to the ceiling so i can feed it into a sprinkler.

I get that pipes can't hover in mid air.. but I ran the pipe into the wall. But when i click to run a pipe from that new point up the wall it doesn't let me move it up the wall. Rather it just moves along the edge of the base of the wall.. or out away from the wall.

So how does this work?

Also.. how do sprinklers work? When I'm placing a sprinkler on the ceiling, it will sometimes draw a column of light down into a planter. Is it indicating that it won't water anything but that planter? And therefore if there's no column of light, will it not water anything? Can a sprinkler only water one planter? If so, then how do I deal with the fact that I couldn't get it to generate the column of light over any of the planets except one?

In other words, once I manage to get a pipe up the wall (which seems impossible), how do I pick which/where/how many sprinklers to setup? I can't get them to aim at planters.. only one random planter was able to be aimed at..

I tried to watch a video on this but the guy was too annoying. He kept deleting and replacing stuff because it wasn't perfectly orthogonal and it became unbearable.

Gardening definitely needs work, for sure. Possible spoilers .
I got pipes working by doing the following:
1. put a stack of pipes on a shortcut, e.g. slot number 6. This allows you to start and stop placing pipes easily.
2. select a pipe from your stack, this will be pipe #1, run it along the ground from your water tank to the wall. Stop at the wall.
3. select pipe #2 from your stack and mouse over the wall end of pipe #1; don't click yet. You will find that it's the non-mouse-pointer end of pipe #2 that wants to connect to the wall end of pipe #1. When it works, the pipe snaps into place and allows you to manipulate the direction of the pipe's other end.
4. Pipe #2 should then run up the wall to the ceiling. Stop at the ceiling.
5. Repeat Step 3 for pipe #3 to your sprinkler. The sprinkler should already be on and should start wasting your water immediately.

Sprinklers don't work as I expected them to; the sprinkler animation for the small sprinkler looks like it can water 3 plants but this is not the case, it only wants to do 2 and the large sprinkler only wants to do 3. I hope the devs fix this - small should be 3 and large should be 5. Use the blue light column as the sprinkler's covering area. Sprinklers can be daisy chained.

Finally, you can use the pipe wall thingos to pipe water through the wall from a water collector outside the ship. Put one each on each side of a glass window\wall\observation bubble and run the pipe into the tank using the method above.

I hope this helps.

How do you get a sprinkler to effect more than one plant? when moving plants around the light column only ever showed up for one planter.

Also they already have those back trellises standing up and visually getting in my way, why can't the water tank input be up there instead of playing hunt the hotspot in between plants?

For that matter why have sprinklers at all? Why can't the pipes connect directly to the pots which are already being fed hydroponically instead of pissing down from the cieling all over my floor? That would keep all pipes on the floor and you wouldn't have to mess with the cielings at all and the walls only when you wanted to cross them.

I'm still confused about the light columns as well. It's just so opaque and horrible to me. I am trying to figure this out but I can't tell what is just me misunderstanding something, me simply not knowing something, the game being buggy, the implementation of gardening being bad, etc.

You move the sprinkler around and pray. There's some kind of gremlin in the system which causes Sprinklers to not "detect" planters which are directly underneath them, as well as to sometimes not water plants that they've detected. The system is... Janky to say the least. I really hope to see an improvement.
