I think the way the tutorial area is set up it FEELS like you should need it to progress, but it's probably just an artifact of an older build.
then how? coming from the old way, I don't really understand the new tutorial. There isn't a button in the control settings listed to build the engine, so how do I build it without the airship builder?
Research the Device Fabricator in the research thingy, then build that. Collect the correct amount of synthetic compounds, then make the engines and also the fuel.
1) Make a scanner
2) Scan the engine, research the engine after scanning it
3) Make an engine, put fuel in it and take off. Silicon is everywhere in the biome and the Airship builder isn't needed to takeoff.
The engine is made in the Device Fabricator and just placed from your hotbar.
The Airship Builder is strictly for Airship parts like rooms/floors/rails/etc as you unlock them, not for functional machines.
Yes, but the quest specifically points to using the Airship builder to make the engine, which is incorrect. I don't remember ever doing that before. But because things changed with the 1.0 release. I didn't think to even use the Device Fabricator.
I replayed the current versions opening and it no longer has any issues older ones might have. it guides you to make the engine in the device fabricator and the Airship Builder quest only appears after you've flown to the radio tower now.
Hopefully this type of issue will stop appearing for future players, I do think that the wording on 'place the engine' could be a little more specific though.
Here is me, all mandatory starter quests completed and ready to take off: (The next quest is to leave the destination.)

Here is me, having just finished scanning everything on the first radio tower, obtaining the quest.
