I lost the friendly insect (spoilers)
One of the ruins had a tunnel that led to a place where I was attacked by a bunch of giant mantises and there was a building with a "friendly insect" inside. I had to leave, in order to get more food (I had a craving for one of those giant blue moths), and also I think I needed plants for paint research. So I went back to a greenhouse, then returned to the elevator.

Only... now I can't find the tunnel opening I found before. I can't really tell whether or not I'm at the same elevator, because there are two (or possibly an infinite number) and they appear to reset when you leave.

Is it possible to find this place again? I came across a single dead mantis near the entrance to a tunnel, which finished the game, as far as story content. Did that or leaving lock me out of this location? Or is it just that I haven't found my way back to that original elevator?

Unfortunately, you have lost the opportunity to collect the friendly insect. That location will not appear again.

Not too sure about that. I actually managed to do a big circle, and went back to a dust elevator... and found it was the same one I'd first been too. The elevator storage boxes were full of all the random stuff I'd left there. Went I went down to the underdust, there was 1 dead mantis and the round hut like building where the friendly insect had been, inside the little corral ( I had already taken it way on the first time I was there).

As long as you never sailed straight away from the first tower, it might still be somewhere on the map. If you got too far away, then it got erased as new terrain was generated.

Yeah, that happened to me too with stuff in the elevator crates. But by now I've sailed all over the place, so at one point none of the elevators were on my radar.

As long as the tower you entered the Underdust from doesn't despawn (travel too far away from it) then you can return to the area with the pet.

If only you had spent another 30 seconds in that area before going to get food *cries*

This is something we will have to return to at some point during production.

I needed a lot of things, if I recall, including ammo. I had no idea what else might attack me there. I should have clicked on the friendly insect, but I wasn't sure if that would just kill him or something.

Friendly Insect should respawn until player pick it up. Same goes for stuff like the New Nature poster at the beginning of the game and the Crossbreeding/Picture of Flowers. If player don´t pick them up right away, they are lost forever.

Yeah I said a few weeks ago we need to explore ways of making these accessible later without ruining the fundamental design of the world.

At any rate, I've just restarted in a new save slot. I was running out of things to do, anyway, apart from adding a lower deck to my ship. :steamhappy: It's fun to go back to the beginning, but honestly, on a second run-through, I'm getting all the tech and upgrades VERY quickly.

I have the friendly insect now and I've set him up in a pet bed. He's adorable, but am I correct in assuming I can't interact with him? He just feeds on my blood while I'm sleeping or something like that, and we're both happy.

Right now, I have no reason to want an unknown mutant bug taking up space on my ship. Unless it can lay golden eggs that are better than moths to eat, or you can fuel an engine with it, I'll pass.

I'm in a game the bug was visible for my friend but not me any help?
I dropped him while trying to figure out how to place him and now he's gone.
