It is a game, a survival game for that matter, and the unwritten blueprint for those means to keep your food-, water- and energy meters in check. If you want a simple walking simulator, there's Myst, What remains of Edit Finch, That Dragon Cancer (my fav), Firewatch, and countless more... Are you also sitting in cinema and yell out all the inconsistencies to reality during the last Fast and Furious movie?
Yes, of course. You can add more/better engines, balloons, lift turbines as well as learn how to make other crafting stations/gadgets.
It seems that way at the start but when you get to Automated Catchers and Rain Collectors it all becomes quite trivial to stay fed and hydrated.
If you find the eating and drinking aspect a bit of a chore, one survival game fairly close to this game is "Aloft", which has a free demo on Steam. It only uses food you forage or grow to cook for buffs, not nutrition. It's currently in Pre-Alpha but is one heck of a game right now. Floating islands you explore using your shoulder-mounted wings and if you find an island you like you can attach a ship's helm, sails, and lift mechanisms, then use it as a flying base. Various crafting stations and with windmills you can build to power them, too. Some floating islands are Infected and must be cleared by fighting the Fungoids that live on them. Forever Skies and Aloft both scratch all my survival/exploration itches. 🙂 (Multiplayer is going to be part of the game but isn't in the Pre-Alpha Demo)

It's the starting area were you get quite a lot of gear to fabricate but there is very little inside deck room to put it all. I was looking for some way to add more deck room but there doesn't seem a way to fabricate it at the starting area, so are you expected to ram it all into that small space, even your bed and then jump over it all to drive the air ship?
It made me thing, no, I must be missing something.
Try the extensive demo, you'll love it.
Well basically because I no sooner craft food and water that I have to do it again. I'm trying to learn the game and at the same time understand what's going on but I spent most of my time making food, water and consuming it.
I got fed up with that pretty quick.

@LeftPaw: Right when you're ready to leave the starter tower and take the ship for it's first flight, you're also tasked to build the airship-builder, which lets you expand and improve your ship. You can build more rooms in your ship even before you take off.
Many, if not all, survival games expect you to explore the world to find more tools and assessoires to make life (the game) easier and deal with the mechanics better. Especially when starting the first time, the best is to take it slow, enjoy the atmosphere the devs try to convey and figure out the flow of the game. And this counts for EVERY genre! =)
Oops, my bad! I obviously need more coffee right now! 🙂
Yes I am taking it slow the world is beautiful in it's own way. I am following the tutorial best I can and keep exploring but I feel I am missing something important. Like I said there is not enough room in the airship to put everything I am making, so I figure there must be a way to add a room to the airship, but for the life of me I can't find how to. I even re started the game twice in case I missed something early on.
So I thought I must be expected to ram everything in best I can and try to fly somewhere else.
This is the best walkthrough I could find and he is having all the problems that I did. :D

From your post I see I'm missing the airship builder, I think that's what is holding me back and I don't seem to be able to research or fabricate one.
