I hate to be cryptic, but you just need to progress the story.
Head to the * exclamation mark * beacon.
First *exclamation mark* station is an overgrown greenhouse where you fill find the polymers for the knife

Knife research required polymer and plastic. Can't research and create plastic until you find plastic. Anyway, all good now.
The randomness and heavy usage of synthetics is what's feeling like a grind to me. Sure there's a lot of it floating around but plastic requires a ton of it and each floating synthetic only adds a few pieces to your inventory. There's also times when you don't have any float by so you might wait several minutes before you can extract again.
If anything I'd lower the requirement of synthetics or increase how much you gain from farming it. I'm taking a break now because this game wore me out grinding >.<
Check your studies menu. It tells you what items can be found at what locations.
