Why does a storm blow in 5 minutes after I land on a greenhouse Tower?
It keeps me on edge when I'm there. One hit while I was somewhere on the 3rd or 4th floor and I did a lot of jumping and praying getting back to my ship.

I totally ignore storms. Can they actually hurt you?

They can a lot.. if you don't fix your zep, they will likely cause you to crash if you get hit.

I'm more worried about my ship than I am about getting struck by lightning. Lightning can seriously damage your ride

As long as you're parked on one of the landing pads at a Greenhouse Tower, your ship is just fine. I park there for days and days at a time with lots of storms rolling in. The tower itself will always be much higher than your ship and absorb all the lightning.

How?

I've had several rounds of critical airship damage parked at greenhouses, I usually park at every POI so that my lure can catch food if needed.

I've been hit so far in every thunderstorm, having expended more than 8 stacks of repair.

I always ensure that the anchor symbol in the console is active also.

Thankfully I haven't lost a module yet, but they are at 0% numerous times.

It depends on the greenhouse, the platform you land on and the size of your airship.

What matters is that the antenna is significantly taller than your airship and that you are actually landed/anchored to the platform.

Then my airship must be a lightning rod, because I'm always anchored and the top mast are 5-10 stairs up from the platform and I'm still getting critically damaged at greenhouses.

I went through several stacks of repair at my last visit during a thunderstorm.

The airship ain't that big either, single balloon with 2 extensions that's holding up a 2 wide and 6 long cabin.

Usually placed with the long side about parallel with the greenhouse wall, so that the deck extractor and lure poking out over the edge so they can be used for farming from the platform if needed.

I stay inside the airship during a thunderstorm, because on my first greenhouse visit I had to use of my medkits to save myself while looting it.

I still get hit inside, but at least I have more medkits available in the airship.

Very interesting. Sounds like you may be parking higher up. I land only on the circular pads which are all far below any of the actual greenhouses. Generally speaking, as long as there is a tower or something that sticks up above my airship balloons, I never get hit by lighting. The only time I do is when I'm doing something obviously silly like flying high up during a storm with no buildings around or parked at one of the flat POIs with no structures to protect.

And you mentioned medkits, are you saying that you take health damage from lightning? Crazy! I've never seen that once yet.

The storms really are a bit much. If i go more than 10 minutes without a storm I question if the game is functioning correctly. in easy mode no less. The only place i've found that's relatively safe to park so far has been the elevator..and even that is pretty bad, as flying debris often damage my ship.

I don't believe storm frequency/damage is scaling much in difficulty settings, but then i've not tried it in super hard mode, maybe that's actually somehow worse.

Maybe we will get base building someday to finally have a safe place to park lol.

I am parking at the circular pads, there's 3 usually about flights of stairs before the first level of loot in the greenhouses and where the dirty water cistern are in the center of the building.

it doesn't change if I have several floors above me or parked on any other POI, I always gets hit at POI's, damaging my airship and myself if I'm in the struck module.

I wish that I had recordings of this if it's as unusual as I'm getting the impression it is.

I've used medkits when I'm around half health during a lightning strike, even though I should respawn next to the bed.

Taking up to half health from a direct hit to a module I'm in at that moment, so I usually run around crafting whatever I can at that moment.

Usually repair or other higher parts for airship expansion, as medkits require such specific resources that doesn't lasts long.

My airship is at the 290 metres height ceiling (3 standard turbines), so I can reach higher places but I usually stay low so I don't have to drop so far when I'm going to other POI's.

I do a half circular flyby before and the other half after looting to get the glass and metals on the greenhouse, usually getting the glass blocking some greenhouse rooms as a first priority.

I usually lands at the closest POI when a storm hits, because I don't want to crash due to component damage or me respawning while the "cruse control" is on.

I might have avoided lightning damage from one thunderstorm, when I was parked at a windfarm where a windmill blade stretched over the pad in the center of the POI.

I have 60 hours into two different plays and cannot remember having lightning cause any more trouble than easily fixable airship damage. Certainly no personal damage that required a medkit. I only use medkits when I eschew ladders and jump off towers.
I fly directly through storms and pretty much ignore them. The biggest issue is visibility but I fly by radar and welcome the rain since it fills my rain collectors.
Playing normal difficulty
one 2x expanded balloon
four turbines, 2 advanced
three engines, 2 advanced

Storms seem to be easily negated as long as you park close to things that are taller then you or move your ship under pads if you are on a small structure. Like sure park on a pad but park as close to the middle structure as possible. I made the mistake once of not moving my ship and then had to use 10+ repair gels to fix my ship and that was the last time I took the storm lightly and changed how I park my ship.
Redneck Gaming Jul 12, 2023 @ 3:53am
There are two places that I feel comfortable "parking" for extended periods (like when working on the ship or restocking food):

1: the lowest of the three round pads of the Greenhouse

2: the elevator landing area (as the building towers above the airship)

Nowhere else do I have good luck avoiding damage in storms..which are, frankly, a bit too frequent.

Storms happen way to often IMO. Easy should have a 50% reduced frequency than current settings. Is there more/less storms based on difficulty? I don't know, but it seems like they are the same.
