How to get rid of items?

I have a lot of unnecessary crates, I threw them outside the airship and now they fly everywhere with me.

They mean dump items on a location that isn't your ship.

Drag the item out of your inventory to empty space on your screen

I have a big box filled with items to be recycled once the recycling comes into play.

Everyone has these boxes, many boxes for boxes :-)
It's like you're on a long walk with your dog and have plenty of bags because there's no trash can anywhere.

Will this return some (or all) of the materials used to create the item being recycled, similar to how the airship builder returns all the materials used in the construction of the airship piece you remove? Or is it just a void slot, simply deleting unwanted stuff?

Both would be absolutely welcomed, and ideally both options would be nice to have available. Sometimes I'd want to recoup some of the materials, other times I would just want to get rid of a thing without my inventory taking a hit.

I want my recycle bin to recover 90 percent or more since I've wasted so many resources just crafting things to see what they did... like oxygen tanks...

if you put empty box in your inventory - not one of the 6 action slots at the bottom - you can click and drag it from your inventory to drop on the ground at a landing site. That way the box dont follow u no more.
