Opinions on Guard Regain?
Seeing all these threads discussing dodges and perfect guards, I feel like everyone just glossed over this mechanic. Undeservedly so. It's literally Bloodborne's "Rally", but instead tied to blocking.

Granted, I'm just past the so-called tutorial boss, so my experience with this game is as small as my self-esteem, but for now GR really feels like a nice middle ground, at least for regular mobs. If you don't like the default dodge and perfect guards are way too difficult - block and restore some of (or even all) HP lost while you have the opportunity.

Until a wild Fury attack comes your way, that is.

Each weapon has a different guard amount, so with a great sword you can block and get all your health back in a hit or 2.
Combat really feels like it's more Sekiro-oriented than Soulsborne, and I think that's grinding on a lot of Souls vets.

Guard regain is a solid mechanic, once you accept that the game is trying to lead you in a direction your muscle memory doesn't want to go.
Good guard regain is a nice safety net to have in case you miss your perfect parries. Been playing with heavy weapons that generally have >70 rating and usually I can recover 100-200HP with 1 hit.
The guard regain . . . . oh screw it, let's call it rally. The rally mechanic is pretty nice. It's quite generous as to how much time you have to regain health, so long as you don't get hit. And its' inclusion adds an incentive for people to at least try to perfect block, as even if they are a little bit early they can rally the health back.
I dropped the first dodge upgrade for guard regain and prioritized it from there. Hit a point where it felt like dodging was a bad habit and perfect guarding/regain from reg guard chip was way better for the rest of the game.
