from what i understand, you have to kill him twice in two separate runs if you want to get all the records in the game. but you don't get anything from sparing him. and even if you do kill him, hugo takes his place as the boss soul trader guy. Do i have that right?

This is only half-true. You gain nothing by NOT killing him but you gain humanity by killing him and if you're going for Free From the String you might want to just leave him alive unless you're certain your humanity is low enough.

You do kinda have to go out of your way to gain enough humanity to be fair.

It needs to be REALLY high to be able to get that ending, plus "that" decision after the Laxasia fight will also affect the ending.

And thats going out of your way for it, gotta tell enough lies and listen to all records, dont do that and youre out of luck.

It isnt until really late game that you even get enough, which shows how high it needs to be.
