Think of Nero's "Devil Bringer", just less flashy.
Plus - it helps anywhere there are clusters of enemies since you can pick them off a bit.
Fulminis is basically a melee attack that needs to be charged up to reach its maximum effect. You'll basically never even get this off.
Flamberge is a flamethrower that builds up power the longer you hold it down. Same issue as Fulminis, the enemies will simply beat you to pulp while you try to roast them.
Pandemonium doesn't affect enemies with a direct hit, it only ever covers the floor and only ticks while they stand in it. It also just doesn't do enough damage to be worth it.
Falcon Eyes is strong, but it has a very high energy consumption, so you won't be able to use it often enough to do any real work with it.
Deus Ex Machina is probably the most useful one for actually doing damage because it synergizes with melee by allowing you to set a trap for charging enemies. But it isn't particularly fun to use outside of that.
Aegis I haven't tried.
Puppet String is IMO the best if you want to play the game "as intended", since it allows you to grab enemies or get extra mobility while focusing entirely on melee.
Like, for instance, the first upgrade lessens charge time for the punch, the next increases stagger damage, then the next is energy consumption so you get more uses out of it, and finally the scaling goes up a letter grade, increasing its damage.
Upgrade it fully, and it just becomes a super strong punch.
