Yeah, the moment you're able to have Lettuce and Tomatoes at the same time, opening up the Salad Bar, so to speak, should be your first priority in order to stabilize your food situation. Just make sure you are producing enough, is all. Lettuce seems to grow slower and in less amounts than Tomatoes, as in my current farm setup I have four fields of each growing and I have like... 8 Tomatoes to 1 Lettuce. And with 3 bases running all at once, I don't have enough Salad to go around.
So it might be a good idea, to help save on ingredients, to diversify which base gets what. My two bases get Minestrone while my other one, for the time being, gets Salad. When I get my main farm workforce going I'll be expanding the operations to get Minestrone and Pizza on the menu but for right now, it works.
But as soon as you can get yourself a Bushi cook and a decent farm, you should make something better.
honestly the best food in my opinion is french fries, 35 satiety and 10 sanity. Your pals will be happy as a clam, tho they will be eating often.
It's tier 3 food that gives slight boost to work and good san reduction. It's cheap and super accessible once you reach cooking pot. Bonus, you can dedicate the pals you'd spend farming on mining until you can produce better foods.
Just make sure you're advancing enough that you don't drain all your food. It works great, but it's a race to produce enough money to make it viable long-term due to early game financial strain. It is not a meal you afk with until you can afford it. I never ran out, but it's worth noting.
If you can't make money, hang a black marketeer and melt him with a campfire. Hit him once and you'll get 10k. It'll do.
Edit: I meant Chikipi Saute, it's just Chikipi and berries and gives you the immediate speed boost of salads before salads are unlocked. Everything above is what I use after.
One slight problem to keep in mind.
Chikpi aren't guaranteed to be near initial spawn in a randomizer world.
In mine for instance, I haven't encountered a Chikpi in the wild, yet.
(Took me ages to find Lamball)
-----
Besides, until you can condense Chikpi and get them producing lots of eggs, you might struggle to feed an entire full base in early-game.
Whereas Baked Berries provide a quick and cheap food source until you're ready for the next mass-produced menu item.
But to be honest, I rarely worry about Sanity, as a Hot Spring is usually top priority for me.
(My current base, I even have them set to Relaxed workload, as I'm not that desperate for immediate production. And the Sanity savings is helpful (especially as I haven't found regular Kelpsea yet, so Pal Fluid is at a premium right now))
