Some kind or priority system for jobs and for individual 'work skills' for each Pal. You need to say to a Pal with more than one 'work skill'. You prioritize Gathering then Planting then Mining. While being able to set a second of the same type to other priorities.
You need to same type of priorities for storage. Store all the berries from this plantation in the icebox for cake, put all the berries here in this storage to make backed berries .. overflow into that feedbox.
You can make it so that the chest you prepopulated ONLY has what you wanted. But when you Pull items for building, you also can't control where they come from.
They can come from your prepopulated chest .. leaving zero there and letting a Pal put whatever they want in there instead.
I absolutely start out the way you mentioned though.
Yeah I totally forgot about the fact that items will be consumed by crafting and/or building stuff. I just thought about this method because this is how I organized stuff in minecraft so I could just mindlessly move my inventory into different chests.
As for pals moving stuff, they usually focus the closest chest no? But judging from the current AI this is probably not 100% reliable.
You could solve this with making is possible to:
1. define a storage slot to a certain item;
2. disable storage slots, so they can't be used.
