Moving saves between dedicated servers
There have been several posts around, amounting to "you can't." However, me and several friends have been trying to figure out how to move save data between dedicated servers, for the eventuality of the initial host PC being shut down.

Moving the save to any other device results in it simply not working (fully). The world data is saved, you can finagle it to save a player's map data, but you can't, at least in our attempts, transfer a player's actual save data. I.e. no Pals, no levels, no inventory, no gear, no guild, no character, period.

This leaves you with a world with all your stuff blocked off, since you can't join the previous guild, and players without their progress.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

What if...what if you dissolved the guild before saving. That way maybe all the stuff that is in the guild is accessible to only you. Then after the transfer, you can access all your stuff then remake the guild and invite the others to it? Just a thought.

As a linux user, both as main pc and deck, it's def not a windows/linux issue, it's def a game being weird with saves issue. The only thing I can assume is there's a flag in the save file that states if it's on a server or not, and not playing nice with the local saves. But idk, game came out yesterday, I'm sure with the coming days/weeks we'll figure it out.

I'm def willing to try, especially since I spent about 45 minutes figuring out what files to move and where, I'll try in a couple hours, here's to hoping my save of ~3hrs doesn't get wiped.

I'm currently trying the same thing, a friend of mine sent me his save directory after playing for multiple hours with a bunch of them. Each of us has a player entry in the "Players" directory, I now copied everything onto the dedicated server and tried playing. However it generated a completely new ID for my ".sav" file, even renaming the old file didn't seem to work and seemingly restored a backup file.
The only thing which carried over was the world itself, but no player data, just like OP said.

There seems to be something in the .sav files which prevents simple renaming to work, maybe a hash? Not sure, we'll have to see how this progresses in the future tho. Or if @Mihoshika finds something out meanwhile.

I was able to move from a Windows Server to a Linux Server, so I'd assume it would work both ways. The main thing you have to do is edit DedicatedServerName in GameUserSettings.ini to match the folder title of your functioning server with progress found in PalServer\Pal\Saved\SaveGames\0 which is a bunch of random characters.

Copy that folder over to the same location and all your players and island data should work.

If anyone else is searching for it:
1. Join their official Discord here: https://discord.com/invite/pocketpair
2. Go to #pal-server-help
3. Click on the little "Threads" icon on the top right
4. Search for "Local Save file to Dedicated server Issue." thread
i was wanting to migrate the ftp from one dedicated host ( terrible service from nodecraft) to Skynode, a much better service, but it gives start errors and won't launch at all, had to just reset everything and start over

Thank you very much. Following your instructions, I successfully migrated the Linux server to Windows.

Hey, do you think you could explain this a little more? I downloaded all of the Pal/Saved files from one dedicated server host (Windows) and I am trying to switch over to a new server host (Linux). I was able to transfer the world / our base over, but it is prompting me to create a new character. I can't figure out how to find the GameUserSettings and fix the characters. Thanks for any help you can give.

I made a Steam Guide for this, you most likely didn't update the GameUserSettings.ini with the old saves folder name. It kind of expands on my original post. Please rate it 5 stars/upvote if it helps you :) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3144673630
