No idea what to do next. (Spoilers)
I play this game with someone else and we've gotten to the point of Scarlet Ore basically. Beat the first 3 bosses and all that. There's a big slime in the scarlet ore biome (the forest-esque place) and we just can't beat it and to be perfectly honest, I'm the only one who's really good at the combat so I wonder if it's scaling but I just can't figure out where to go next or if I HAVE to kill this thing. There's also some insane mage armor in the ocean biome that could help but that'd be very hard to pull off. idk what to do. No more progress.

You don't have to kill the slime boss in the Wilderness, but it can drop nice loot. Have you made the Hologram from the Malaguaz statue?

If you can't beat Ivy, you might be underleveled and undergeared.

Who is Ivy? Also the scanner? Yea we have it but I can't imagine going after those is a good idea yet.
Ivy is the name of the slime boss in the Wilderness.

Have you built the upgrade table and improved your gear?

I mean not all of it. It's expensive but is the upgrade table the secret to progession rn?

If you got the three gems put in the statues to bring the wall down, you can talk to the core for more instructions. You can also go back to the statues by the core and can build useful stuff.

The Malugas statue has a hologram pod that lets you build scanners that show you where all the rest of the bosses are.

You can find lots of types of gear out adventuring, or you can build it at the anvil. The thing is to look for equipment that boosts the type of build you are going for, then you can use the upgrade table to improve the gear to whatever tier you are at. Most of the magic based stuff is only found in drops at the moment.

The other thing to look for is Ore Boulders that get you a lot of ore if you set up drills to mine it.

Oh, and yes the bosses scale in HP the more players are there.

For what I remember all slimes bosses are not tied to progression (exception for the very 1st boss)

Also after the first 3 bosses and removing the wall you're free to go to other biomes without killing their boss, get ahead on ores and gear then comeback and kill the bosses.

You should be able to progress without the need to defeat the bosses, if you found a wall that you can't break, just put a static drill to drill through

granted, you will face enemies that's way harder than usual, but you'll also able to gain better material for better gears there

I never know that I need to defeat more bosses in that specific biome until I've made a lot of progress in desert area, skipping ocean area because I see that shiny galaxite ore supply while I was strolling through XD

In short: static drill op :v

Hitpoints for bosses depend on difficulty and number of players.
For Ivy :
1 player : 19,578 (casual), 39,155 (standard), 58,732 (hard)
2 players : 34,087 (casual), 68,173 (standard), 102,258 (hard)
source : https://core-keeper.fandom.com/wiki/Ivy_the_Poisonous_Mass

The fight against Ivy usually is easier if you have the necklace which grants immunity to poison (which is a common random drop in the wilderness).

After bringing down the wall around the core area (dirt, clay, stone biome), you are free to explore the next biomes without the need to engage any bosses ... it's a sandbox game.

There is a progression in ore, that you need Scarlet (wilderness), Octarine (sea), Galaxite (desert), Solarite (crystal) and Pandorium (passage) Ore in that order for new workbenches and Upgrades. Usually it is sufficient to find 1-2 boulders of each type, place 8 scarlet drills to each and continue exploration. Each boulder yields 1800 ore.
Scarlet Ore is a milestone due to better drills and the Upgrade Station.
Octarine Ore is a milestone due to Portals and the Speedboat.

You get stronger by leveling your skills and by upgrading your gear. A lot of useful equipment can be found as random drops or in chests, only a few items are exclusive to bosses. Despite their name the 3 types of gems for upgrades drop in the Shimmering Frontier and can be farmed there.
You can use food to buff your stats enormously, especially when cooking food with rare ingredients from gardening (golden plants) and fishing in the late game biomes.

So what I'm getting out of all of this is Explore more, make a static drill, pray to god for more magic drops (cuz I'm being told constantly that I'm a tad screwed cuz mage stuff is still not fully implemented so I have to be lucky), make more food and spam that upgrade station.

mmm, basically yeah, minus the mage stuff cause you can just use any weapon you want imo, if you want a good mage weapon to start with, try farming malugaz, his staff is pretty good

I actually have both the flame staff with the Shaman Skull as well as the arcane staff

I don't know what you mean regarding magic?

Keep in mind that the strength of your build is a combination of your
- pet
- skills (all skills)
- armor and accessories
- weapon (esp. attack speed)
- food buffs

If you eg only focus on the magic skill, you will miss a lot of potential. You can get additional crit from ranged combat skill, additional damage from cooking, additional magic barrier from summoner skill which can add to your magic damage, etc, etc

Best watch some youtube videos on different builds to get an idea how builds work in Core Keeper. Boni seem to be stronger for faster weapons since the boni are applied more often per second and effects can be triggered more often.

It might be helpful to build a storage area where you store 1-2 pieces of each equipment you find in case you later need it for a build. Most equipment can be upgraded to Lvl 19 and many items have kind of unique stats, so for many builds you have to upgrade low level items.

Once you get the mastery that make your crit restore mana, with enough chance to crit you can just machine gun with arcane staff just keep upgrading it and it becomes a beast for single target damage. But until this point fire staff does the work.

In early game the Fireball Staff is nice since it can one-shot most non-boss enemies, especially after some upgrades. The fireball also has a huge "hitbox", so it is easy to hit enemies.

Once you switch to Arcane Staff, you will notice the difference ... it has 3.3 attacks per second but you usually miss a lot if the target is farther away and moving since the "hitbox" of the magic projectiles is tiny.

You make it sound like the arcane one is worse
