For some reason it automatically spawn them in that house after you leave.
They glitch through the door just like those animal glitch threw wooden gate/wooden fence. Start building walls to keep them in with out any doors. Only I meet them now is way point teleport.
Just use conveyor belt to force them back in.
Makes sense that it's the same as the livestock bug. I have been using the "corner fence" as a gate for my livestock pen... maybe I need to do that for the merchant house too.
It is odd though that my merchant has wandered half a screen away, I added another bed and replaced her artifact and she won't re-appear... that's always worked for me in the past.
Other user was right about how replacing item spawn npc on the floor to spawn them. I remember wiki said that bed have to be replace too and also I make sure never sleep that bed. All you have to do is break the bed replace it back down.
