defense builds dont work at all. dps is king in this game. a dead enemy deals no damage. plus reduces the total fighttime vs bosses which in turn reduces the risk of dying. same concept as terraria. the faster an enemy or boss dies the easier it is. so going dps is ALWAYS better. like the boss urschleim will oneshot you NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO on ANY difficulty (aside the dodge funny thingy but thats more meme than useful anyway since the boss doesnt stop) due to the way its designed.
Everyone I play with goes this way too much. :) Your HP comes from a total of all your stats so take your time, explore, and level up those non-combat skills. It is very easy to try to rush to the crystal area to get the best equipment right away... but your character will be squishy.

ok?
To be honest, that's not really all that different from normal, where you'd survive 4 shots instead of 2.
It's probably one of my favorite games, but combat gets really sketchy when you reach the outer jungle/desert/ocean biomes. Then it gets easier in the crystal biome, then again harder in the passage.
For a bunch of enemies melee is simply impossible both on normal and in hard mode.
There are some broken builds out there and you can get THE BEST gear for the most broken builds from random drops and crafting.
We give honest suggestions, even to people trying to troll up a fight, and there's been a few over the years.
Even a melee build might want a single minion to get in a bit more damage. The auto swap on break is a good feature, but if you've reinforced them and have your stats leveled it really shouldn't take that long.
If you work at it, you can get the legendary unbreaking sword once you reach the wilderness, before fighting the boss or the slime out there. This ends any worry of that. If you use the upgrade table on it it's still viable in endgame as you get each new material.
I noticed you didn't talk food or potions. Stacking the % based damage reduction against bosses with the skill that does the same takes the edge off as well.
I will say, yes, melee is the weakest build in the game, until you get the Stormbringer. 5 hits per second with a % trigger build... delicious.
Good spotting, grave bumping things to spam again, I got tricked.
Just don't get hit.
To be fair, a post from less than 3 months ago isn't exactly dead. I feel like it's only necro if the topic is 1+ year old.
If you don't get hit, it's like you're playing on easy mode.
For me, hard mode is a bit too much of a one shot fest, while the default difficulty is not challenging enough. So having that inbetween difficulty would be pretty much perfect.
