Tips for leveling up Gardening?

It takes ages even with a decently sized farm, any tips? Also, the gardener background seems quite awful with a tiny bonus and less useful starting gear than fisherman.

No shortcuts that i know of, as you progress youll get stuff to making harvesting and watering much easier.However, it is worth it, since foods buffs are pretty strong.

Best way I found to level farming is to rush sprinklers then make huge farmsteads and just get it done with the best hoe to harvest the largest plots in one go.

Use higher material tier hoes to harvest larger grids per click. Harvesting, planting and watering around 150~ plants is swift enough and should give several levels per harvest at lower levels, and gives at least one level once you reach 90 and beyond.
It's the first skill I got levelled to max

All of the backgrounds give minuscule bonuses which could otherwise be obtained within minutes of starting the game; they're more intended for flavor than function, I reckon.

As for leveling gardening, I just make sure to plant every seed I obtain, expanding my farm as necessary. You start to gain levels fast once you're harvesting hundreds of crops at once!

Large fields, lots of seeds, best hoe (right click harvest) and watering can (or sprinklers, if you can make them) you can get. Harvest, replant, repeat.
