They do need to make it a little more clear about the lantern's use.
Visibility is an element of gameplay, you don't get it for free.
You can make a Torch, you can carry one in your hand, and it'll light up your surroundings. You can PLACE it (on the ground or on a wall) and it'll provide light in that location (unless something destroys it).
You can eat food that will provide a glow effect. You can also build stronger lanterns later on (with higher level resources).
But yeah, a lot of the time Visibility is going to be an issue.
