sword icon flashing while mining?

hi! new player here, trying out the game for the free play weekend. I'm <1h in and exploring, but I was wondering why/if the sword icon flashes when I'm hitting walls? I have a pickaxe on my hotbar as well, but it doesn't flash, even when selected? not a huge deal, just unsure if it's a bug or if I am doing something incorrect.

and if you have a torch selected on the hotbar, does it auto-use the pickaxe?

I think that indicates the cooldown if you were to switch to your melee weapon and start attacking.
Noticed basically the same with ranged weapons, just longer cooldowns by the nature of their attack speed.

It's just to keep you from switching between two weapons to attack faster.
