The first lantern comes from the copper workbench.
There's also a shortcut key to hold a torch, it's the left stick button on the controller but don't remember the keyboard key.
I'd think it would make sense to at least let players put a torch in the offhand slot.
Hold shift to hold torch you can also place torches while holding shift
Until you get good lanterns or pets to light your way
Fireflies were much more rare than all the other worlds I've played in, and I did see the button to craft a torch for a long time, so I took to carrying around a tulip and blindly fighting monsters in the dark until a friend played the game and started as an explorer with a lamp and showed me how they work.
I suspect this was more on the bug side and not intended to be the normal experience, but I think it would be cool to equip torches in the off hand slot for a basic starting light.
But that does cause problems. Torches seem brighter than other lights so it would kind of obsolete the starting lamps.
But now that I know how easy it is to get to crafting the basic lamp, I just go for that.
I dont find how to create a lamp..its just so weird that you cant hold a torch ahah.-.. its all games that I played so far over the years. But I will tr restart the game from scratch and see if its possible to start as an explorer..smart..Thanks :)
