0.59% (small flower vessel) and 3.42% (large flower vessel). The rarity alone, whatever, easy enough. But then 9 abilities rolling 12.5% chance of being right each (assuming equally weighted odds). Toss on hoping for a specific color variant of that?
Owlux? Oh sorry, you're a melee build and it randomized with 6 abilities that buff ranged abilities. You already "won the lottery" to get the initial egg, but now you gotta play a different lottery with your winning ticket to actually win?
Core Keeper feels too casual of a game for that level of grinding. Sure there are grinds in the game, but this feels like a next-level one. There's a lot of games that do this sort of mechanic and most end up getting rid of it because it only serves a very select amount of players, not the wider playerbase.
I still like the RNG, but its indeed tough considering the scarcity of some eggs. That could be changed someway... maybe at some point which you keep unlock npcs, they have eggs from them?
Heck, maybe copies of the egg being used to repick the skills. If I knew it wasn't pure random, I'd just need 10 copies of the egg for a perfect pet, it'd be fine, but RNG can make things like this take 3k copies of the egg.
Core keeper definitely feels more grindy than Minecraft, Terraria, Stardew, Starbound, etc. to me :
-An "average" mob farm is way more huge than in any other game
-There are plenty of ressources that can require large-scale automation (boulders, multiple farms)
-The game encourages to visit multiple worlds in order to gather more
Sure, I ended with 3 boss chests filled with failed pets before getting my first 5/9 (burn embertail :D ), but this only made me happier when I got it, and I cherish that one even more than if I simply rerolled its stats.
Even though only embertail and slime are renewable, the game encourages to explore multiple worlds or even trade with people on discord.
This might still be tedious, but having a 5/9 pet is a luxury anyways. Even failed ones can do pretty good to clear all the content available.
Only thing I wish is an NPC to give me pet food in exchange of all my failed pets
