Agent 64: Spies Never Die

Agent 64: Spies Never Die

N64 edition please!
It would be really cool if there was some kind of deluxe edition that would come with a ROM for the real Nintendo 64. You don't have to optimize the game perfectly; you could aim for a analogue 3D, but that would be fantastic. Then ask Limited Run to release real cartridges. :lovechirp:

The minimum requirements far exceed the N64's hardware capabilities.

I don't doubt it would be interesting, but doing so would require rebuilding the entire game from scratch to adapt to the N64's limitations, which isn't feasible.

Furthermore, there's only one developer, and they're still working on the game, updating it and fixing bugs.

It's not going to happen unless there's an unofficial fan-made version for the N64, but for that to happen, the game would have to be very popular and other developers would have to be interested in making it.

Some guy made Portal solo on Nintendo 64, and it works great. I think it could be done just as well. The point is, a game that parodies N64 games but doesn't work on the N64 itself. That's not right.:gordon:

If it's true, and guess what? I had to do it from scratch.

That's equivalent to developing a new game that requires time, something a single developer doesn't have.

Furthermore, there were problems with Portal; they couldn't just add the levels. They had to study the hardware extensively to be able to load just the levels. And we're talking about a game that generally doesn't have enemies, just you and the puzzle level. What I mean is, if the N64 already struggled to load the size of a level with just a box and a couple of buttons as a puzzle, imagine one with enemies, lighting effects, etc. Much more difficult.

In the end, that developer had to cancel the project, not because Valve asked them to, but because Nintendo wouldn't allow it. The reason was that the tools they were using were proprietary to Nintendo.

And with that, they had to make two decisions cancel everything or redo everything again with open source software development tools.

So imagine that. It must be difficult to get that game running, and if we're talking about hardware, Portal requires a less powerful PC than this one... if Portal was already difficult, imagine how much harder this one will be.

Interestingly, that developer is working on another game, Junk Runner 64. This time it's something he invented himself, so he doesn't need to ask anyone for a license, and secondly, he's using open source software, so Nintendo can't sue.
Just turn it into an N64 edition yourself. You can already turn off most of the modern graphical effects, enable the CRT filter, lower the resolution to something like 640x480, impose a custom frame rate cap of 20-25 or thereabouts, and even play with an N64 controller (there exists a community-made NSO N64 controller layout).

An actual N64 cartridge is never going to happen, but when you set the game up like that you'd might as well be playing it on N64.
You don't need an N64 if you already own a Gaming Laptop or a Silicon Mac. I understand the nostalgia, but that console is 30 years old and is already dead.

Dude what are you even talking about?

This is impossible.

I wouldn't say impossible, Portal on the N64 is a master class and the same guy who did that also did a megatexture demo.

For sure it would be hard, and a lot of draw backs would be needed. But I would never say it would be impossible.

Modern Vintage Gamer on youtube basically challenged people to port Doom over to the Neo Geo and the progress in less than a few weeks is crazy.

It may look low-poly and low-rez texture, but it's still far beyond what the actual N64 could actually output.

Also, even if you managed to get the game running on the real N64, there'd still be the issue of cartridge space and RAM memory - game consoles were seriously starved for RAM until up to the 8th gen consoles.

Doom running ona neo geo isnt even impressive though lol. Thats the same era
I love these armchair dev posts who think "looks low poly, why no run on n64?"

Calling them armchair dev's is honestly giving them way too much credit, they are completely clueless.

I still liked the prototype of Retro City Rampage on an actual NES but yeah, even if some devs back then did black magic (Perfect Dark almost felt like a Dreamcast game on the N64) we shouldn't forget how consoles weren't powerful compared to PCs of its time.

On the other hand a PS2 homebrew is feasible theoretically.
