comparing this to Amongus its like Comparing COD to BF. and saying COD or BF is trademarking stealing from BF/COD because they also shoot and go pew pew
lol
You also have more reason to finish a game with the way cosmetics work in this game, and that's a huge plus.
Stuff like Werewolves, Mafia, Town of Salem and whatnot existed long before.
This game is actually doing a lot of stuff differently and only really "copied" the structure of the innocents being able to win without HAVING to find the criminals and even that, i'm not sure if other games did it before Among Us, but adds to a game like this and let's the innocents actively work towards a win condition, rather than having to wait till someone gets murdered to actually start playing and let's them actually play if they got murdered aswell.
But man... kids really need to stop with this "it's the same genre, therefore copied *insert popular game here*". It's like saying Megami Tensei/Persona copied Dragon Quest because both are turn based.
I get it, people love Among Us. So do we! That's why we did what we did because we wanted to bring it to the next level without having to wait for an update. We wanted to do things our way. Our way is different. Some people and and will be forever happy running around as a jelly-bean-like characters yelling "sus" while trying to find out if they are a crew-mate or impostor. We're not taking Among Us away from anyone. They already paid for it, they can still play it whenever they want. That's fine, but why they yap and bite at anything that comes remotely close to social deduction as a threat to their identity is beyond me.
I've been gaming longer than most of the people on Steam have been alive. Playing games IS part of my identity. Gaming was never about IP or brand loyalty... at least for me. It was about waiting to see what the developers built on. How we went from Tetris to Dr. Mario. to Match 3 games tells a story of evolution and it's something we should be excited about. I never once felt my identity as a gamer threatened by "newer" games. I still call Diablo II one of my all time favourites, but Path of Exile knocked the entire genre out of the park. Was it unique? Barely, but I didn't avoid it because at the heart of things I love games and I am confident enough in my own identity to just be able to enjoy something I like without fear of losing who I am.
When developers iterate and build upon a genre I get excited, not scared or defensive. The difference I suppose between playing games and making games is that you become severely detached when you make something. You can never truly enjoy playing it the way your player base does. You have to push yourself to imagine what they are thinking and feeling. One thing I never considered is that we would anger people just by existing. On the flip-side, the fact that so many people have come to the discussion boards and dropped us negative reviews after playing 0.1 hours with the comment "amogus" and we still have over 90% support from the community says we're doing something right.
We will continue to improve on the genre and grow with our loyal fan base. One day a better version of Goose Goose Duck will come out and people will play that one.
ss13 is a ripoff of among us because clown sus!
werewolf is a ripoff of among us because sorcerer sus!
town of salem is a ripoff of among us because mafia sus!
(i'm honestly suprised people still play that piece of ♥♥♥♥ amoger game, much less claim it's the original in ANYTHING)
Games from the very beginning of have been adaptations and inspiration done by OG game developers probably before I was even born and grew into the empire it is today. The gaming community hasn't grown due to people sitting on one particular genre and going "K guys. No one else can absolutely copy our formula in any sense of the word even if it's inspired and not the exact same."
