I love that steam has added that function, and I hope this game will use it! :)
I guess you are new to the gaming industry. See co-op is for people with friends and family. Local co-op and splitscreen co-op are still very much wanted because believe it or not but many people have girlfriends, wives, husbands, kids etc.
Many people don't even purchase co-op games that don't have local co-op. Now remote play isn't perfect but it's still a nice addition.
I would prefer playing this game with my gf in living room on a big TV but if that's not an option (which is absurd because a game like this should have splitscreen) then remote play would at least still let us play together since I have 2 laptops and a PC.
In your world I should buy 2 PCs, 2 monitors and 2 copies of a game if I want to play co-op games with my gf. Doesn't this sound absurd to you?
Remote play and splitscreen co-op are definitely good things.
The reason being, with LAN working, you can 127.0.0.1 the game (provided it allows two instances of the application to run simultaneously), which is effectively split-screen anyway. That, and s/s proper would take re-coding -- something I don't think is so easily done: pretty sure that, over the years, I've read s/s requests for many other games, and any / all dev' responses have been of the "too hard" / "not compatible with source code" ilk.
Having said that, I doubt any other co-op functionality besides online / Steam will be forthcoming. Reason being, it's never been in their games before; OMD3 = OMD2 game engine; the game was made with Google money, which is now gone; RE have many ports to work on, and if consoles don't have split-screen already, it's astronomically unlikely that the game ever will.
