Especially if you're a newer player, you'll have a hard time finding good matches.

Offline modes are limited. There's a "story mode", which is really just arcade mode. There are endings to unlock for each team, but the endings are just moving pictures. Nothing that spectacular.
There are combo trials, but honestly they are not that fun nor challenging compared to previous KOF. They do teach you some basic bread and butter combos for each character though.
There is a "Boss challenge" mode, but so far there's only 1 boss. Honestly if you're decent at the game, you will complete it within 2 tries - so maybe 5 minutes.
In terms of game play mechanic, I think this is subjective. I personally think the game play is good - the best part about the game. To be honest, I would go as far as saying the game play mechanic is the saving grace for this game. Everything else, for instance single player content, graphics, art style, online matchmaking, it's all way below industry standard. But I am a KOF fan since 94. That's why I still play it.
Currently, matchmaking is absolute ♥♥♥♥, and you can barely find matches. SNK said they will fix this problem and introduce cross play. They should release cross play functionality by summer when they release another new DLC character. But as I said, online play is very rough, unless you play rank/casual, you will be matched up with pros who will annihilate you in room matches. A lot of people smurfing there.
Reply is a bit long, hopefully it is helpful. Hope you will give the game a try despite all of its flaws. I would say it is worth it,. especially now considering it is on sale.
